19" wheels on Z4 - ride & handling

Thinking of upgrading from my OE 17" to 19" wheels. I have running non RFT for both performance and ride.

Could use some inputs from those that are running 19" wheels on their Z4. Thanks.

I bought my car with 19's already on them. Never again. Stock suspension was OK. But after switching to KW V3's, I lost a month of good driving that I will never get back. It was rubbing both front and back. Ride was terrible. Performance don't even get me started. Life just wasn't the same. Immediately switched to 18's APEX ARC-8's and oh man did that make up for the month of terrible driving.

It depends on what you're looking to get out of your car.
19's: Looks > Performance
<19's: Performance > Looks

I'm selling those 19's if you're interested

I'm not planning on changing the suspension. OE Standard set-up (non-sport). Looking to fit 19" for looks but if the ride will be severely affected, I'm out. I replaced the OE RFT as soon as needed and never looked back again.

Hence, the dilemma of going with 19" affecting ride quality. Otherwise I'm quite happy with the OE 17" and PSS square set-up.

Thanks to everyone so far for your inputs. Please keep 'em coming.

If you're keeping the OEM setup and don't care much about performance you won't be sacrificing too much. I noticed mine because I canyon drive the hell out of my Z. For daily commute you'll be alright with the OE suspension. As far as comfort, I've never driven my car with the OEM wheels so I can't add a straight comparison, but I wasn't complaining with the 19's on OEM suspension. It was just when I went the KW route everything flipped 180 degrees.

I've ridden on 19s for years, I can't tell the difference between them or 17/18s and the ride has always been good. Rough riding 19 wheels are just another one of those internet bullshit beliefs that never seem to away. My Z4M rode better on 19s with rubber band tires and slammed with H&R coilovers than it ever did on the stock setup.

Nicky, maybe I just had bad experience with mine, different wheel specs, tires, ride conditions, all play a role that probably weren't in my favor. That's just my experience. Don't need to call out other people's "bullshits," we're here to help each other.

I find this interesting however. 19 inches on rubber band tires slammed on coilovers is a bit arguable in ride quality compared to OEM wheels on OEM suspension.. But I'm glad it's working out for you

Please give us your wheel specs for OP to benefit from.

No No, sorry you took it that way. I wasn't directing my comment towards you, rather just what I've heard way too many times over the years from what people say in regards to 19"s. Sorry about that, your post wasn't even on my mind when I wrote mine.

Just a miscommunication no worries. I probably just spent too much time on e30 and Honda forums where everyone's against you lol. Not to get side tracked from the original thread but zpost is probably the most mature forum group I've ever joined. I should've never doubted it lol

Btw, can you please post the wheel/tire specs for OP. I'm kind of curious too, and for the sake of this thread not ending this way lmao

if you get cheap heavy 19 inch wheels and hockey puck tires the ride will suck for sure. a lightweight 19 inch wheel with a proper performance tire will ride amazing. weight plays a huge factor in ride quality

Maybe the truth lies in the bold part.

I went from 18's with run-flat tires and stock sport suspension to 19's with non-run-flat tires and H&R sport springs. I'd say that the ride quality is not much different when it comes to comfort. However, if your suspension is overall worn out (bushings, shocks, springs etc.) you might find the ride quite interesting or worse. To me a good combo is power flex bushings, H&R sport springs and Bilstein sport shocks (or Koni, but I prefer the stiffness of the Bilstein).

hmm.. biggest diff riding 19's is if you hit a massive pothole.... that does not feel good. no doubt it won't feel good on 18's either, but Drak me, its a helluva lot worse on 19's.

The stock 18" Continental (non-Run-Flat) was a STIFF tire. When I upgraded to 19" Hankook V12 (don't recommend this tire) years ago, I instantly noticed a softer ride and less steering precision. Moral: Other factors are more important than 1" diameter.

Actually quite the contrary. They say the heavier the rim is the more it absorbs bumps on the road vs lightweight rims, hence why some manufacturers as stock choose slightly heavier rims to balance out ride quality in achieving the feel they want for a stock car. Unless of course they are selling the car as a performance track version, generally the rims are actually heavy for this being one of the reasons.

I've many times swapped stock specs sizes for a lighter setup and that alone already changes the feel to seem more jarring. Coupled with the psychological effect of feeling those bumps will dent a wheel.

Unless we are talking about ride quality as being performance feeling better in handling then that's a diff story because yes it will give a better response if the wheel is lighter.

^ What he said. It's why they fill the Rolls Royce Cullinan tires with foam.

I was under the impression that foam is added to tires to reduce road noise inside the cabin. They do the same to Tesla tires.

Ive been riding on OEM CSL 19s since I bought my car New in 2007. They are quite livable. Comfortable in my opinion with PS2 tires. Knock on wood never had an issue.
