Wheel Studs
Anyone have these installed and can give me insight?
Bimmerworld, Turner, Vorshlag, TCK all have their variants of the studs...just don't know who I should go with (Probably bimmerworld or vorshlag for money reasons). I figured it would make my life easy when it comes to swapping wheels every weekend basically...and I think they look awesome. Opinions? |

I went with Turner after reading many positive reviews from club racers, not to mention TMS uses ARP studs. It's about time to get a new set, will most likely go 75mm this time.

I've been looking at doing a conversion as well, and have been trying to find out what length studs to use for a regular "closed end" nut......... 75mm is most likely too long for that. Most sell the conversions, from what I can gather, with open end lug nuts, so getting the length exactly right for a closed end nut is not a worry. Anyone know what length is needed for a "no spacer" situation? I'm going to go with the Apex EC-7 wheel when it's released very soon, 18x8.5 ET35 front and 18x9.5 ET22 rear.

I can't believe people own cars without studs, but I guess if you neveR take your wheels off you would never notice. I have taken my wheels off 4 times in 3 weeks.
Buy them and never look back. BTW: I have had many from many manufacturers and have never noticed a difference. |

the one annoying thing is that with my long studs and open lug nuts, I can't use the x style lug wrench because its too shallow. I liked using it before because you can spin it in your hand very quickly as opposed to a big torque wrench with a socket on it. Time to take the socket to the welder and join it to the x-style lug wrench =)
oh, and I'm using the turner kit. I take my wheels on and off seemingly weekly, sometimes more. Tuning the suspension, fixing the "tuned" suspension, swapping wheels, brake jobs, cleaning, and shit like that

I too can't believe that some of you are running autox/track events without studs. It makes life so much easier. I've been using the TMS 75mm for the past few years and I have no reason to complain.

If you get an impact wrench, don't bother getting a impact socket. The walls of mine were too thick and did not fit inside my wheel. Just get a Craftsman - if it breaks, you just get a free replacement (I've done this). Last edited by kklin; 06-15-2012 at 03:02 PM.. |

I am about to go to 275mm rear Star Specs so will now also need a spacer in the rear. Studs make tire changes less of a necessary PITA. Bolts are a unnecessary PITA. You probably can't go wrong with any of your manufacturers above. I usually buy two extra lugs so if I lose one, I still have matching lugs. Last edited by kklin; 06-15-2012 at 03:04 PM.. |

75 is fine up to a 12mm spacer.

This is a great idea. Scale of 1-10 with an oil change bieng a 2 and a valve adjustment bieng an 8, where does difficulty of installing these fall?

True, I just factored in annoyance of having to jack up all 4 sides lol.

....although you could probably do them one at a time without jacking or removing wheels.

I would say installing studs is slightly more involved than performing a tire change. Vorshlag's instructions here - http://www.vorshlag.com/documents/in...it_install.pdf. They also sell a small kit with anti-seize, wrench and I forget what else. Last edited by kklin; 06-18-2012 at 02:23 PM.. |

Fortunately for you, one of my rear Apex wheels broke last week at an autocross incident, so I currently have a mix of wheels on my car while waiting for the replacement. I took reference photos of both for you and posted here. Last edited by kklin; 06-16-2012 at 11:12 AM.. |

75mm is going to be the size I'm going to get for sure. I think I'll go Vorshlag. They have everything I need: 5.5 mm, loctite, anti-seize.
Thanks guys. |

That was my thinking too. I did left sides one day and let it sit on stands and then did right sides the next. So plan your weekend accordingly.
