Upgrading bluetooth microphone

Has anyone upgraded your bluetooth microphone? (for those w/bluetooth factory equipped)

I find that while functional, it sounds to others like you're in a cave and has an overall 'hollow' sound to it.

There are a few places that sell upgrades to our microphone such as this -->http://www.bimmernav.com/store/catal...e-item-93.html

Has anyone tried this? For around $60, it seems like a no-brainer to do. The microphone in our unit is super last-gen (as is the Nav etc). So for anyone on the phone as much as I am, this may be worthwhile. Opinions?

From the link there

BMW Microphone Part number 84 31 6 938 762.
The 762 P/N is the upgraded BMW microphone, that has only recently become available from BMW.
I'm not so sure, searching that new part number on reaoem, shows that part only being used for 2.5i cars made up to 10/2003 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...=84&fg=30&hl=2

Our cars might already have a newer mic, considering 2003 isn't so new anymore

Guys, I'm enjoying my new 2008 Z4M coupe since June.
Thanks for all your help.

Quick question, the microphone in my 2008 Z4M coupe, is picking up too much road noise, therefore cannot have a decent conversation.

Anyone tried replacing the microphone unit in Z4M? Were improvements noticeable?

Thanks!
Sergio

I wish you could turn of the speaker volume more during a call. I can barely hear people when I'm driving w/the wind and road noise.

Ya the bluetooth is completely worthless specially if you are modded (exhaust/headers/....)

I have completely given up on using it! A while ago I was considering getting one of those Parrot systems. I installed one in my mother's toyota and it sounded phenomenal.

I'm not to sure on this but whenever I have my top up window up, it sounds horrible with echo and delays.

With top down, it's perfect. The other end thought I was inside an office. It seems to me that the roadster mic might have noise cancelling feature.

I wonder whether the mic is gauging ambient noise or the position of the top to turn on/off the noise cancelling feature.

It is pretty crappy. One thing that helps is make sure your phone volume is turned up while on a call with bluetooth.

Make a call.
While talking to the other party over the blue tooth, turn up the volume on the phone and car.

This was a problem with my iphone when I first started using it.

I just bought one of these, since my original microphone has been sub par.

I'll install it today, and report back

Anyone know how to take the top steering column cover off? I removed the little screw up top, but it still feels secure, and I can't seem to find any screws underneath

The column is 2 pieces, top and bottom and they snap into place. You have to carefully undo the clips on each side, be careful though because the plastic scratches easily. I believe one clip is by one of the stalks on the left.

I just bought an external unit, which can be moved from car to car. And it works decently for $100. I gave up on the stock unit, in the loud car.

Can you plug it into the AUX input?

Good question. Have never tried to, but I do know that it has the FM transmitter and it does come thru the speakers that way if wanted. lemme check on aux input...

this is actually an upgraded replacement for the stock BMW microphone (which is located on the top of the steering column). it's supposed to have improved noise cancellation and better voice quality.

i also have an external bluetooth unit from my previous car, but i like the simplicity of not having additional devices to hook up here and there, not having an additional thing to charge, etc.

I'd prefer what you describe above with an upgraded mic, let us know how it works out
