Car transport

Hey guys,

This sort of goes in the off topic forum but I felt like it would get better feedback in here than in there.

A few weeks ago I bought a Z4M from the dealer in Asheville, NC. I've been trying to have the car shipped to Denver from there. The shipper that the dealer recommended is based here in CO, and after speaking with him everything seemed good to go. In fact they found a transport for it in a few days, but the car wasn't going to be able to be delivered by the time I left for vacation, so they held off. It's now been almost two weeks since that and they still can't find a transport for it. They haven't even found someone who can take it, let alone schedule a pickup date yet. They keep telling me that it's not a common route and that's why they're having trouble finding a truck.

This seems unlikely to me. At this point I'm considering flying out and driving it back, but I really don't have the time to do so.

I've never shipped a car before, so I don't know if I'm being unreasonable or just impatient. Should they have been able to find a truck to put it on by now? Should I just try to find another shipper?

BTW they quoted me $975, if that makes any difference in the speed of pickup/delivery.

I never had any issues booking a transport in the 3 shipments I did between Baltimore and SoCal. When I sent my Z4 to Baltimore they did take a long time to send the car out after picking it up though. $975 is about what I paid for my shipment, so unless if you are going with a covered transporter that sounds a little on the steep side.

most shippers are just brokers. They have to rely on the actual shippers. I've shipped cars 3 times now and I would say your story is common. Patience is something that will be tested at some point while shipping.

Based on price, it sounds like you aren't shipping in a closed transport. I would get two other quotes. You have no loyalty to this shipper, like I said, they are just a broker.

+1 That exactly what I dealt with. Only a broker who finds the actual moving company and drivers.

Grant Turismo Auto Transport did mine (Enclosed), I'd highly recommend them.

Just my 2 cents, but I'd call someone else and get it done. I'm in the market for a Z4MR and I'm assuming I'll have to have it shipped to me when the time comes. The last thing I want to do is have to drive mine home from across the country.

I'd call these guys (http://www.f40.com/index.php) and see if they can recommend a shipper. If you've ever watched Chasing Classic Cars, you know what a perfectionist he is and he ships cars everywhere.

Good luck and congrats with the buy. Btw, how much did the dealer come off their asking price?

I used Intercity Lines to transport my Mcoupe from Connecticut to the bay area last year. I paid about $2100 for it but totally worth it. Fully enclosed, they covered all the seats and the exterior. Since my cars was the last to be deliveried, it got to stay in front and on top of the trailer. There were many cars worth over $100k being transported at the same time. It took about 10 days for the car to get to CA. I hightly recommend these guys (i believe F40 Motorsports/chasing classics & Jay Leno use them all the time).
My advice is pay a little more and get an enclosed transport. Also, try to get a direct car transport compay! Most of the time, your car will get loaded into the trailer and stay there until it gets to the destination (the same driver for the entire trip as well). My buddy used a broker and it took over 6 weeks to get the car from MA to CA because it sat on the hub somewhere waiting for available truck.

This. If you can afford it pay to have a single source ship your car. Every other shipping company is just a broker that makes deals with other shippers. They're all small operations with 2 - 3 people and 1 or 2 trucks.

I made the mistake of shipping through a high rated shipping company on transportreviews and when my car arrived both fangs were scraped (they had been repaired by the dealership, i had pictures), the front bumper had pit marks like if it was driven in a rally and the car had 100+ miles extra on the odometer.

When I asked them about this, they just said that they had to drive it between shippers at one point. On a dirt road at 100mph I imagine.

They also (thankfully temporarily) lost one of my keys. When I signed my release I noted that one of my keys was missing, as the release clearly stated that when you signed it you waived all claims. The guy flipped out, threatened to take my car... I almost had to call the cops. He was flipping out because he only had the last section of the journey and he was only given one key, so according to him he was only responsible for that much.

In the end, I strongly encourage you to use a shipper like intercity that controls the whole experience end to end and has some accountability.

Tried Intercity, they won't ship to me (or possibly from NC) so they're out. I'll check elsewhere.

There are pros and cons of what kind of transport and where the car should go on the trailer.

The idea of having the car positioned above is obviously to keep drippings of oil and other chemicals, including acid off the paid. However, when the car is placed up front on top, there are other perils. At this time of year, count on receiving a car plastered with bugs and their related chemicals as the truck makes it way throughout the central states and their farms. This can be a chore to clean off and there may even be some paint damage. Besides this, A friend once lost a high value Firebird 20th Anniversary when it launched during an emergency stop. He was insured, but the car was totaled and not replaceable. Even in a covered transport, a car can walk from side to side inside the trailer during long distances if not checked by the driver.

So the message is, go with quality and service and avoid a decision based only on price.

My coupe was the least expensive ride on the truck, by far, again, at least call Gran Turismo. They are not a broker, same driver picked up and delivered.
Philly to Baton Rouge for around $1000.

What's the URL for Gran Turismo? http://granturismotransport.com/ exists but that seems like a front-name for shipcarnow.com

http://gt-ms.com/ ? - they have some really bad reviews on transportreviews.com

Maybe http://www.gtautotransport.com/ ? They seem to be a broker...

Tell you what....Just pay for my plane ticket and I'll go pick it up. I'll even spring for the gas

Some of my most memorable road trips after flying to pick up new BMW's. The e39 M5 from San Diego to Seattle being my favorite! Great way to bond with your new toy.

Gladius -

Have you seen I-40 from Asheville to Knoxville? Wow! what a fabulous stretch of highway for a car that can handle the curves. Now the other 1000 miles might not be so nice, but boy that first part would cement your love for your new car!

Really wish I could do it, but I just don't have the time right now! Anyway, I think I've got the car on a truck (or will be soon) so thanks for the input, all! I'll be posting up once she arrives in my driveway.

I'd hire this man to drive it back.. you'd have it in a matter of hours. Though it might not all be in one piece, that might be a concern.

I had a car shipped to me (New York) from Louisiana with an enclosed carrier that is not a broker. What I can add to what has been said already is:

1. Definitely go with an enclosed carrier that specializes in high priced cars (most do, I think), don't think about any other solution
2. If possible, to try and get a better deal see if they will be flexible with the pick up date. Tell them a general idea when you need it picked up and they may be able to fit it into a truck that they will have in the area. It will be found money for them and they may cut you a break.

I used a firm called Horseless Carriage. Their website says "nationwide" but since they're based in the North East I tend to think they're not a feasible solution for you.

Spend the $$ now and you'll have peace of mind and not have to deal with all the hassle of getting your car back to where it was when you bought it.

Well, here she is. Picked up on Saturday afternoon in NC, and here it is on Monday morning in Colorado. Relatively painless once I found a shipper.
