Opinions wanted on calichase's next fun car
So my current stable contains ...
2007 BMW z4m coupe (track friendly) 2008 Prius (daily beater) 1973 de tomaso pantera (project car/ something to always wrench on) I would like to have a daily beater, a track friendly car, and a fun street car in addition to the pantera which is always a project. So what I am looking for is a modifiable car that will be only used for street driving. I have considered a lot and really what I have come down to is the following, which could not be more opposite. -997.1 turbo (probably looking at a 6mt 2009 sport chrono, sport seats, LSD , which is the last year made and most sought after of the generation) would want it white with pccbs, cf interior trim and sills on black interior. Probably could get one with a few miles (40ish) for 60-65k. Would do a few bolt ons ($15k all together maybe over a few years, fabspeed exhaust, Cobb/ ptf tune, run e85, intercoolers, kW coilovers and camber plates, boost recirculation valves, and some meaty tires (255f 345mm rears!!) on a set of hre's. Make 530-580whp easily, and 500 ft lbs. lots of room to upgrade with bigger turbos, etc. -other option is a late c6 z06. Possibly 2011-13. Would want the z07 package, and the carbon package and similar miles (40k ish) and prefer black. Now the c6 z06 really ranges in price, mid to high 30s for a early c6 (2007-08) or mid 50s to 60s for a later well optioned model. I would spend maybe 10k on mods over a few years, meaty tires on either hre's or ccws, coilovers, and do something along the lines of an lpe 660 package with heads/cams/intake/headers/tune and make about 550-600 whp and 500 ft lbs on 93. Would love to do Loma wide body flares and rockers too. Now I have never been a domestic car person, but I do have respect for the corvette and it's tuning abilities. Investment wise, a well optioned late model, z06 will probably still depreciate some before settling out, however I think the turbo is at its bottom dollar currently and will begin to rise (manual with mezger will be somewhat valuable some day) I may throw a blower on the m coupe in the future (ttfs prima plus) but I know that no matter what I do I will never get this level of performance out of the m coupe with out sacrificing major drivability. I see the m coupe as a forever car (unless I replace it with a .2gt3 rs) and it incredibly balanced power wise with current power (307/270 to the wheels) So of these two options what does everyone think? I'm leaning towards the turbo but giving the z06 a fair chance. Ain't to replacement for displacement, all 7L of it that is... Some photos of current stable if anyone cares Last edited by Calichase; 09-03-2015 at 09:20 AM.. |

Hahaha!! My pictures uploaded oddly so here is one of the de tomaso and my m coupe at summit point [IMG][/IMG]
To be honest, as much as I dislike the Prius, it's the perfect car for someone like myself. It costs me roughly $25 to fill the tank and go 500 miles and insurance is something like $150 a year and I can travel in the hov lanes and park anywhere without paying in some cities. And best of all, it's impossible to modify, so I can save up for the m coupe! You really appreciate driving your fun cars more when you have a Prius!!!! Someone sent me this the other day |

Truth of the matter is yes. And a probably prepared c6z would be an absolute track weapon. I have some sort of sentimental value placed in the m coupe and can't seem to let it go, so that's why I would rather add another. The bike is a great point that I have thought of in the past, but knowing myself I don't think a bike would be the safest idea. I like speed, and having a bike, even in the the hands of the most capable rider can be very dangerous in the DMV area. I think you hinted at something mentioning my m coupe still being street legal. The way to do it would be having a non street legal full on track car, and then a fun street car. However that then adds on the need of a truck and trailer to get to the track, and currently I don't know if I plan to track my car enough to justify all that. Nevertheless actually pulling the trigger on making it "non street legal" and hacking it up to put a cage in. |

Kind of different than the other cars mentioned but if you're not going to put too many miles on it, why don't you pick a car that will also make you money?
To me the NSX is one of the most versatile, sports cars of it's time. And they have been doing nothing but going up in value. They are very reliable, still gorgeous, relatively easy to wrench on and much loved! |

I'd keep the Z4M as the fun street car and get the 'Vette for track fun if money were no object. If money were a consideration then same keeper route (Z for street) and a track prepped but still street legal E36 M3 you can drive too and from the track. I'm actually faster in the M3, coils, other mods, than a stock Z4M. And at the price and lack of relative rarity the M3 isn't the same sentimental factor or ball up factor compared to the Z4M.
The Porsche Turbo with PCCB is a poor track choice if you're thinking of that. Expensive (16k) rotors, needs suspension mods and/or TPC racing DSC module. If your thinking street the power is fun but of somewhat limited use given how fast felony speeds approach. Under 3 sec to 60 is fun but how often? |

The only thing I'm jealous of is your bench vice is bigger than mine.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I would put a CF airbox on the M coupe and turn it into a track car. Get an F430 or Gallardo for the street - something that's clean and will remain stock. Buying a car that's already depreciated and won't see hard track miles or extensive modifications is really the only way to I could see owning an exotic.

Any concerns with the valve guide issue on the C6Z?

I LOVE my second car/truck for sure! We won't talk about gas mileage though.
