Suggest a muffler to lessen low RPM drone?
I had a little custom axle back exhaust work done. We deleted the rear mufflers and replaced them with high flow resonators. It sounds amazing above 3250RPM or so, but there is an incredibly loud annoying drone below that, strongest at a little above 2000RPM. Yes, I know that more drone/noise is expected with a mod like this but I was wondering if anyone knew of good mufflers to replace the new rear resonators with, or maybe even add/mod something a little further upstream. I would like to avoid spending $900-$xxxx on a new rear section if possible.

Because the mufflers are not optimized for our car (aka it was a generic resonator) this is why you get drone.
Stromung make a really good exhaust for under $900, as well as a couple others. |

I did the same route as you with the generic resonators, had the same experience with drone but not as bad since I lined my trunk with Dynamat. I now have Aero turbine mufflers, drone wasn't as bad before my EU headers, almost non existent, but now that I have the headers the drone is back. It's still not nearly as bad as when I just had the generic resonators, and the overall sound is much more exotic and mechanical. I think next up I'm going to try Borla mufflers and see what happens. Good thing about these custom exhausts is that they're so cheap to put together and fabricate that I'm pretty sure even after my third system I'll still have spent maybe about $1000 on all three, and have definitely had fun experimenting and learning more about exhaust flow and sound characteristics... |

Check this out!
http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=755714 I plan on doing this to my car very soon, I've got a spare set of rear cans ready for dissection!

Thanks for the tips.
Another thing I noticed is that I'm getting a decent amount of popping noises under very light throttle or after lifting off the throttle. I'd expect this with aftermarket headers/xpipe, but not with what essentially is a muffler delete... is this normal? |

Any of the aftermarket muffler that I've known has some kind of drone. How about go back to OE muffler, paint it flat black and change the tips?

I'm getting used to the drone (or the carbon buildup is quieting it down some). It's still pretty loud, but I think I'll just deal with it for now. Plus, I like the upper RPM sound, and the popping sounds pretty neat too, IMO. |
