I loved his show. May he find peace now.

Ya. I'm both really pissed and sad. IIRC he has a young daughter.

Just don't know how someone chooses to force their child to bury them.

I share the same sentiments. As a child of a parent that committed suicide, there really isn't a more terrible burden to put on your kids. I really like Bourdain but this definitely changes my opinion of him. Still respected but....mixed emotions I suppose.

I disagreed with most of his stances but really liked him as a 'tv' personality. Loved his show and his no pc style. His job seemed like the dream job, imo.
Yes, a selfish burden is now in place.

You have to have a lot of demons. Bourdain had them for sure. I figured his body would just give out due to the abuse.

It's always good to turn your addiction demons around but you have to wonder what 20+ years of hard core drug abuse does to one's brain chemistry. Not an excuse, no one held him down and put a needle in his arm, but some of that shit once you fuck your brain up it's beyond repair.

I'll be happy to answer any question you may have about what 20+ years of drug abuse results in. I'll start by saying it makes you very aware of other peoples intentions makes you a bit of a recluse, even to those you care about the most. Sitting right next to someone you love and yet feel as if you are on the other side of the planet and completely unable to relate to them.

I'm sure the fact that much of modern mental health treatment is on a trial and error basis to dial in meds doesn't help either. Things often times get worse on the way to getting better.

During my career I was involved in investigating so many suicides, they are tragic. Folks have a tendency to try to rationalize someone taking their own life. Its always way more complicated than whats on the face of it. Someone who suicides over a break up for example......it's much more than the breakup.

The one thing for sure is the loss and confusion for those left behind.

That's if you can get treatment, can afford it or your insurance actually covers it, and get the help in a timely manner. Mental health services at least in the US is a travesty along with the social stigma that comes with admitting you need help.

Taken from a Reddit post:

A quote by David Foster Wallace about how painful it can be to live with depression.
“The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.”

"For anyone that doesn't know DFW killed himself in 2008. Adding considerable weight to this quote."

I can say from my personal experiences, they can get MUCH worse. "Dialing" in the meds can have some serious effects. I became, for a lack of better terms, a zombie for a while; completely emotionless.....completely....a very scary thing. I have been through therapy and put on meds and I became much more satisfied with my life after I decided to deal with my demons and just stop the therapy and the meds. Don't get me wrong, I still have issues; today for example seeing yet another person that I admired commit suicide puts me in a fragile state of mind, but I feel more accomplished by dealing with it and getting over it on my own versus having to rely on a discussion or meds to numb it all away. I also realize that I am more mentally resolute than the average person so I'm sure that plays into it to a degree but still, seeing/hearing things such as Mr. Bourdains decision brings me right back to this place.....as it will his daughter for the rest of her life. Again a terrible burden to place on anyone. Suicide only passes your hurt to those who care for you.

This is spot on. The human mind works much like a lock. We use the key, or what information we have, to try and make the tumblers fall into place to either understand or find peace. When the tumblers don't fall into place and the lock cannot be opened either due to lack of information or understanding, this is when we are faced to either stop trying to understand why or the madness begins to set in. The loss and confusion is insurmountable, it essentially becomes a part of who you are all while trying not to allow it to consume you. Very dangerous and delicate balancing act here.
