This is rather frustrating. I purchased that 6-speed transmission he's offering about 3 months ago. OP went MIA after promising he'd get it out over and over. Just had to post to bring context to everyone wondering. Just finished handling it with PayPal.

Swaps aren't easy... life usually gets in the way I guess. I would take that shell if he was legit! Could use another 2J

More likely he hit an obstacle that he felt he couldn't beat. Considering he didn't post about it here I'm guessing it wasn't some technical limitation. It could be something bad happened in his life so maybe hold off judgment while you have no idea?

All we know is that there's been no updates and what looks like the project being parted out. It sucks that he disappeared after selling that transmission but did he fight the paypal refund or just stay missing? Hopefully everything is ok

True, for all we know get got really sick and he could be dead by now. No way of telling, but these things also happen in life of course. We also cant see what time he was online for the last time.
We just know that he offered the car/shell up for sale.

Yes maybe he got sick or maybe his life circumstances changed otherwise. He still sold something to a forum member and then failed to deliver.

If he's dead would be valid excuse I think?

Don't get me wrong - I love crazy builds. But given how rare these cars are, I'm always a little saddened every time I see one get chopped / drilled / cut / welded / swapped into a track monster - One more Z4 lost forever, One less Z4 to grace the streets with its natural character & attitude.

Agree, but in only helps increase the value of the rare unmolested ones!

Two schools of thought

Bit of a philosophical issue, but on the contrary, it's a shame to see a sweet high performance car like the M Coupe become a garage queen and not driven to it's full potential. And the E86M isn't that rare or special. It ain't an M1 or Z8...

Is it smog legal in California?

If it's race only, than a Drenth sequential would be a better tranny option for track.

Nothing is smog legal in California. (Engine swaps/performance mods) but the transmission I don't see why it wouldn't be as it's not a software calibration that changes anything with air/fuel.

I saw an episode on Smoking Tire and a guy who had 2J swapped his Mustang, said that if you put in an engine that's newer than the car you are putting it in, you can receive a CARB exemption if it meets the original emissions of that engine.

Yeah you can swap in a stock engine and (possibly) get it exempt, but when you swap a 2JZ you're going to add bigger turbos, downpipes, intakes, intercooler etc and then you won't be able to smog it legally. Like most people do you can just do an under the table smog for 100-200$ cash
