I have a 2003 Z4 2.5, i bought both tensioners for pulleys and also purchased both belts. i did some research on some m54 engines and found some diy ,but nothing specific to a z4. i figured i can manage the rest from "TIS"...i took off the radiator shroud and fan,but i noticed this huge guard in my way, it has some gaps were i can get my hands in there but the tools dont fit with the ratchet connected...i didnt notice this guard in any of the diy, but then again none were for a z4. it seems like its connected to the whole frame. .......my question is how do you take this guard off?? i posted some picks below the guard is metal and painted black, i managed to get one of the 5/8 bolts off by mcgivering a smaller extension, but then again the guard stoped that from coming out as shown.. im stumped on this and would appreciate anyones help asap, since one of the belts is off already..thanks

That's not supposed to come out. Your going to have to work around, through and below it.

That's what I figurded too since it has gaps big enough, but that can not be the issue...because even on the one bolt I was able to fit the rachet on, after trying numerous size extension small off size...but when I did still couldn't get the rest. The one I did loosen, could not come out due to the metal guard in the way..I posted a pic of this below...so it has to come off some how..it does look like it splits into two, don't know though =/..I'm lost.

unfortunately thats what i think i have to do ...Ive stood did for hours trying to figure a way around it, and or trying to figure a way to remove it..ive searched online for diy or anything related to this and nothing...except for my trustee TIS, but then again that gives very little info.and reasures both our thoughts ...i managed to find the part on TIS,but there is alot more to it then what it shows. i believe it shows insturctions once radiator bumper etc.. is all off =/ here is the link. http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/s/view.pl?1/08/15/48

Take bolts out of motor mounts and lift the motor with a jack until the bolt has a clear path.

You can lift just enough to get the bolts clear. I did this with no ill effects.

I had to do some work with the pulley/tensioner system when I installed the ESS supercharger. Just be careful where you jack it up and go slow. You only need a few inches. Are you replacing the idler pulley as well? At $30 its cheap insurance.

This. I'm doing the same thing to install my VF supercharger. IIRC, removal of that frame would also require removal of part of the AC system... which is not an easy DIY.

I wish I had caught this before you went to all that trouble. Definitely no need to raise the engine for this.

Here are some pics from when I did this and also changed the oil filter housing gasket.

Tools required for the Oil Filter Housing gasket change:

Here is the T60 location for the lower pulley as shown from below the car:

Here is the location of the top pulley (actually 16mm) shown from above, note the car is one the ground and the engine not moved:

Here are the belts removed and you can see the radiator/fan cover is still in place and the engine is sitting on its mounts. You can also better see the upper pulley since the alternator is removed:

Finally here is one of the oil filter housing removed. A lot of the oil came from what was left in the housing, but you can see the evidence of the leak pretty well. If you see this on your engine around that housing it is time to replace this:

I hope this helps you out.

Cheers,
Donovan
