Valentine 1 Won't Power from Cigarette Lighter

So, I went to plug in my Valentine 1 using the cigarett lighter for the first time into my new to me car (I had loaned it to a friend).

It wouldn't power up, nothing. I tested in an another car, works fine. I got back into the Z4, pushed in the cigarette lighter...POP yeah, it's hot, I guess the outlet is working. Plug the Valentine back in ..wiggle the connector all over the place, twist/turn you name it...nothing.

What gives? Has anyone else run into this? My next step is to take a multimeter to the cigarette lighter outlet just to see what's what.

I plan on hardwiring it, but that's on the to-do list for now.

Thanks!

The cig lighter in the Z4 sucks! Lots of things I've tried don't work in it. Very few things do. I ended up hardwiring my radar detector, didn't take long.

Great! A simple thing that I'm sure the teutonic engineers have made better in some manner (iLighter?)

Guess I'll be hardwiring much sooner than later.

Thx.

I was gonna suggest checking the fuse, but you said the cig adapter works. Strange, my power adaptor worked fine with the stock cig connection

My GPS has trouble sometimes getting power from the cig lighter.

Just take the time and hardwire it now, took me 10 mins

+1 to hardwire it.

Or use the adapter from the V1 kit. It snaps onto the plug adapter & takes up the slack built into these new larger sockets.

I had to spin my arround until it worked and then hope it did not pop out, I quickly hard wired it only used the plug twice.

I hard wired mine to the fuse box to an empty slot with a fuse splitter.

Stupid thing, but are you sure the fuse in the cig lighter adapter hasn't backed out a little? That got me once.

Hardwire install is done (purple and white kinda hard to dig out of there!). Had to pin a new RJ-11 cable though, I had used the one that came with the V1 for another install. Interestingly enough, the RJ-11 connectors from Radio Shack don't fit 100% in the V1. No power when the new cable is positioned certain ways and I can see the connector moving around slightly in the jack on the V1.

I really wish Valentine would get on the GPS memory/location bandwagon. Every damn CVS I pass I say to the V1 "I know, I know"

My cig lighter is temperamental. I have to move the plug till it finds a position it likes. Sometimes will lose the connection after a bump though. Good move on the hardwire. I'm thinking about getting a V1 as well.
