well now i know some small differences from 3/4 and 5, however it still doesn't answer the question if 4 is what i should use on this 04 z4.
i read on UK articles that 4 is recommended and no issues. i read on one bimmerforum that they strictly recommended against 4 and said to go with 5. so yeah this is where the confusion comes in for me.

It depends on how you use your car.

Woa WHO recommended DOT 5? DOT 5 is a silicone based hydraulic fluid and can only be used in a system that's converted for use with DOT 5 fluid, or system that CAME with DOT 5 fluid.

in going back and searching i only found a forum about not using dot 4 at all. i might have assumed that meant to use only dot 5, or it could have been on a brand new z4 thread, i don't recall at the moment. are brand new z4's on dot 5 or something?

I was hoping somebody with more knowledge of the various brands and sub-types (like TYP 200 versus SL6) would give you a straight answer, but I guess I'll have to give it a shot.
I'm 95% sure that's exactly the stuff you need.

Check the owner's manual/brake fluid reservoir lid for the spec. If it says DOT4, then essentially any DOT4 fluid will work. There is of course a quality difference, I personally have the stuff posted in the OP in my Z4M and it works just fine. For a street car TYP200 and ATE SuperBlue are essentially the same, I've been told by a few knowleable racers that the only real difference is color to help with system flushes as you know when you've reached the new fluids.
Don't buy cheap shitty fluid, and unless you're tracking the car extensively and worried about boiling the fluid don't buy the most expensive stuff either. I no longer use SuperBlue purely because it stains the reservoir and it's harder to tell at a glance if it's burnt etc
