Yep, normal.
I always thought it was the Vanos using the pressure stored in the accumulator to hammer the exhaust camshaft to the "start position", but I was wrong. SaltyNC mentioned in another thread that it doesn't do that if you hold the clutch in when you shut it off. Sure enough! So it must be the dual-mass flywheel.

My mechanic doesn't seem to think it's the throw out bearing at all. Can you confirm that after repairing the TOB, this shuddering stops when you shut off the car?
BTW, there's a ton of posts relating to the S54 motor that this shuddering is normal. Personally, I find that hard to believe. I've driven other S54 cars and this was not occurring. |

I had a master transmission builder diagnosis the sound, before I assumed anything. He told me it's the throw out bearing, and said might as well do a clutch/flywheel job at the same time, and rear main seal. All the noise disappeared once I completed the job replacing all mentioned parts..

I put 100,000 miles on mine with the shudder at turn off.
No noise at all idling with foot off the clutch that would indicate TOB trouble.

Usually TOB problem is noticeable idling in neutral with clutch out
