Oddments Center Console Lid Basic Function

I'm working to put a badly neglected 2003 z4 back together. The lid to the storage compartment is broken and i'm trying to understand the spring and damper function. Is it supposed to spring closed or spring open after pushing the latch?

Are you referring to the console in the bulkhead or the tiny tray by the e-brake that houses the SoS button?
