Pondering

Thinking about selling the M Coupe and looking at a 1M or possibly a Cayman S (not 718). Yay or nay? Time on my hands is dangerous and expensive.

Oh I know the feeling. Time on my hands is exactly how I ended up with my Roadster.

1M, I'd say go for it.
981 S, I'm not as sure. I think I'd want at least a GTS, and I know GT4 is way too far up there (at least for me).

Do you think you'd miss the NA engine?

I think people that have bought a Cayman S ended up coming back or eventually selling it. 1M is a good car but why not get an M2 instead. More availability and while looks are subjective, it looks nicer.

If it were me I'd go for a 911 (preferably GT3) instead of a Cayman. The Cayman is fairly similar and I don't think the premium you'd pay for it is worth it over the Z4M.

Helped clients get each one of those. Both still own the cars.

Cayman S is very good car, and one can't go wrong with the 987 chassis.

My client loves his E82 1M so much he didn't really drive his Porsche Turbo much after he got the 1M that I found for him.

It was his first BMW and he said he loves that little car.

There isn't a bad way to go here.

Be wary of any P-car fitted with an engine that can possibly suffer from the dreaded intermediate shaft failure issue. That would potentially be a very bad way to go.

As for me, if I owned a well maintained Z4M, let alone a coupe, there is simply no way I'd ever part with it.

It's a pretty simple, preventative fix if you cough up the $$ upfront. I'd say it's completely worth it for the peace of mind.

You're correct about the Cayman comparison to the Moupe, a lot of extra dollars for very similar performance, still intrigued by the 1M though. Limited production and a driving experience that is still a bit raw. The coupe has about 121k on the clock that's what got me to thinking about this.

I think the retrofit kit costs about $1000 - $1500 IIRC. There is a significant amount of labor time to install, 20 to 30 hours comes to mind but I may be wrong. And the number of shops willing to undertake this may be limited. But if one were to find an otherwise great car that could benefit from this and the kit could be installed by a competent shop at a fair price, it would certainly be worth looking into.

At this mileage, if you had already taken care of the VANOS stuffs and bearings, then it's really only maintenance to worry about. Set aside about $500 - $1000 per year and you are already ahead versus another more expensive car for somewhat similar driving experience. If you haven't done VANOS and bearings, then that's about $3000 worth of addition work, but it's still the way to go comparing to $20K - $30K going to an "unknown entity" of a used Cayman or 1M!

If this isn't your primary car, then the decision to keep it is even more compelling. The only reason to get another car...is the itch to get another car.

I wouldn't worry about the 1M to be honest. It's a hodge podge of M parts that have been proven already, and there are plenty of N54's running around.

Pretty interesting discussion as I like all 3 cars mentioned. Answer must be to add them all

My "unknown entity" wasn't referring to just platform. It was more of a general remark on a used car (someone else's problem)

Before I purchased my M coupe 2 years ago I was dead set on a 987 Cayman S and test drove a 987.1 S, 981 S, 991 911 Carrera S and the Caymans really failed to live up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong, it is a fantastic car and an agile tool, it just lacks the character and exclusivity I am looking for. Two minutes in the Z4MC and I knew it was the ticket (seeing as a 911 is still $5-10K out of my price range and DIY ability).

Don't go 1M, its not offering anything vastly superior to the Z4MC you already own and you get to deal with previous owners and a used car all over agian. M2, that idea is a bit more enticing for sure. New car, clean slate etc. If I were to go to Porsche it would have to be a Cayman GTS or 911 Carrera S

Thanks for all the input and after a bit of soul searching I believe I'm staying put with the M Coupe. It really does give me everything I really need in a sports car.

you should go over to the porsche experience center, its right there in Georgia. for about $500 you can have a private driving coach and a Cayman GT4 for an hour and a half on whatever course type (oval, skidpad, etc.) suits your fancy. a comparatively cheap way to find out if you'd really enjoy a cayman. they also have the base and S for a lower rate, and things like Cayman vs 911, etc.

Funny you should mention that, the wife suggested that very thing yesterday as something we should do on our off day. Will definitely pursue it.

I can see why you might be looking at a change with 120K miles. I agree that a Cayman 987 variant would be the most similar experience, albeit a bit smoother overall. Can't go wrong with a 1M. That is one of the most fun BMWs I have driven. A completely difference experience than the S54.

GL!

i had lunch last week at the porsche experience center in LA (they're like 5 minutes from my office). Looks like an awesome experience, I'm planning on trying it myself sometime soon.
