Maf screen

Do the s54 powered z4's have a maf screen or air straightener in the airbox? Mine has never had one but I recall the e46 m3 having one....

I'm wanting to remove the 1) air restrictor/curved "snout" 2) baffle in the air filter box 3) MAF sensor screens. This is in a post called WTB RPI Scoops. post #19 explains a 7% increase in power, do to better air flow. 330 to 353. But in looking up MAF sensor I see you are wanting to replace your screens. Is there any danger in removing this, or any of the other 2 pieces ?

I have had the the carbon filter (your #2 baffle in the air filter box) removed for the last year or so without any good or ill effect that I had noticed. I had also dropped in an aFE dry filter - also without any good or ill effect that I had noticed.

The MAF sensor screen, I have read mixed reviews on. Some had reported idling issue with it removed. In fact, the Gruppe intake requires you to move over your MAF screen as part of the intake install. But then again, I never had any issue when I had the Eventuri installed without that MAF screen.

The air restrictor/curved "snout" is something I may want to try to see if I can get more intake noise, which some had claimed that it does.

The OE intake is already pretty efficiently design. I'm not so sure there is much to gain here. The only reason that I'm messing with mine is to try and get a bit more intake noise without having to resort to an aftermarket intake (for smog reason)

This is why you want the honeycomb mesh screen. It's counter-intuitive, but the mesh creates greater airflow.

That's also why there's such a thing as a rear diffuser.

All I saw was how bubbles travel through water better in a tube with 2 different types of filters. I'm missing the connection.

In theory, the turbulence that will result from removing the screen will cause more back pressure than the air resistance of the screen.
It will also cause your MAF to get a bad reading, since it's only sampling a portion of the air flow and assuming the rest of the air flow is the same.
And the turbulence will cause the MAF reading to be jumpy/noisy.

OK, Stickman, check out post titled WTB RPI Scoop. # 17 starts it off. Will removing the 3 pieces get me a 14% increase in flow which mpathic states equals 7% more power, which translates to 23 more HP...330 becomes 353, by simply removing ALL THREE stated parts, essentially for FREE ? I get your take on the screen and MAF sensor. I'm learning as I go here, since for the last 13 years, I've been tackling problems squeezing power out of 1972 technology on my 240Z. I built a 3.1 Stroker. I want all the power I can get out of my Z4M, but I don't want to do it at a cost of causing more problems or damaging something.

Take it out and see what happens.
Just do it in such a way that you can put it back if it doesn't work out.
My guess is you won't get any extra power and it will run rough. Just a guess.
