FS: Considering Trading In??

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
None

Item Interest
I currently have an 08 Space Grey Z4 M Coupe with 24500 miles, the car is under factory warranty until March 2012 and is CPO'd until March 2014. The car is all stock and is in very good shape, some minor curb rash on the wheels and the vehicle had some paintwork/bodywork done on the front bumper and right fender. The vehicle was repaired to very high standards, the body shop works on Aston Martin's and Lamborghini's.

Bottom line I am considering trading it in for 29k, but wanted to get your guy's thoughts on whether I might be able to do significantly better private party.

I'm going to take a leap and say that $32k is probably what you'll get at most, assuming it's clean title still, etc.

I think that's a pretty good price on a trade. I'd guess you might be able to get 1k - 2k more than the trade price. The CPO will be of value to some buyers, but the repair work offsets the CPO a bit (even with high quality work). Car has average mileage (not super low miles). Having all maintenance records and being the original owner is a plus on the sales price too. Bottom line I don't think you'll do that much better.

What are you thinking of trading to?

+1 M-Fanatic & Finnegan comments. just paid thirty two for an '08 w 16k miles, factory thru April '12, no CPO (yet) but it is a mint garage queen (and I had to ship it). I think you could probably get ~31 if you have some time to hold out for it. The repair work also evens out the CPO in my opinion too. Bottom line though, there aren't too many '08's out there for sale right now to compete with.

Thanks guys for the info, that was kind of what I was thinking. The car didn't have any frame damage or anything, but being picky myself, I can understand the repairs canceling out the CPO. Thinking of trading it in on an E92 M3 or trying to find a 1 series M that isn't too marked up.

If there is any accident damage listed on Carfax/Autocheck it will devalue the car; however, if it is not and the paint work is excellent (and it sounds like it is) 98% of the people looking probably would not notice/care. Seriously, how many cars out there have had the front bumpers repainted? So its really just the fender that is the concern.

In the real world, a bit of paint work is not going to cancel out an additional two years of factory warranty. If you trade in your car; the dealer will have very little trouble selling a CPO 08 M Coupe for $34k.

I may be interested in buying your Z4M, depending on conditiona and service records. Do you have any pictures, and where are you located?

Does your state give sale tax exemption for Trade-in? In Connecticut, we don't have to pay sale tax on the portion of the trade-in (at 6.35% sale tax, you would save almost $2k). So there might be some potential saving that you could take advantage of if you trade it in. Plus selling privately will be a pia for such a high value car (there are a lot of dreamers, joyriders out there).

bottom line...yea you'll get a few grand more in private party. there's a good number of people actively shopping for the zedM's and the balance of your CPO is icing on the cake.

BUT...you shouldn't sell

8k miles/yr is low mileage. I'd hold off for the extra $2k . GLWS

Thanks for all the input, while part of me definitely wants to hold out (I never trade-in a car), I really would like to move the car prior to the end of year and I don't see that happening with private party. Plus the tax benefits pretty much make up for the difference.

Sounds good. If the overall deal is advantageous (new car price, taxes, etc.) then why not? GLWT!

Here on the East Coast, I was quoted $24k if it was in OK condition and $26 if it was in Good/Great conditoin. This from a BMW group and their book values. Thi was just over a month ago. I opted for third party for the first time ever and it was the best choice.
