'06 M engines

I had heard that there was a problem with the '06 M engine. Should I avoid buying a used '06M and stick with the '07's and '08's?

What problem? I haven't heard of anything except for the engine mounts, which is easily fixable and easy to check as well.

The same engine is in the 07 and 08 M as well as the last generation M3.

I don't recall the specific issue and ran a search also so must have been minor. Not trying to cause alarm, just wanted to see if anyone had problems or concerns as I plan to buy soon. Thanks

Must have been the right side motor mount thing, it happened on a small percentage of the '06, had my 4 bolts replaced anyway (my dealer rocks), by the way there was no damage and all were perfectly tight. Other than that the S54 on the 6, 7 and 8 are exactly identical.
My beauty has had no problems for 42k miles, even valve clearance has not needed shims and there is no valve noise at 3k like others here have mentioned on all year models. Oil hs been changed in between inspections and frequent trips to redline appear to keep this engine very happy. Me too!

There's no problem with the 06 engine - they're the same as the 07 and 08 Z4Ms. BMW wasn't developing the S54 that late in the game.

Thanks all for the insights. It has to be the engine mount issue that I had come across.

the problem lies in the transmission the borrowed from the 3.0si, a problem that BMW nearly dismisses entirely, where under strain it has a propensity to grind second gear, the only resolution they offer is once in a while replacing a gearbox, which itself it a placebo, because it is destined to fail again.

wish i didnt love this car so much in spite of its flaws
