I didn't have to make any bung modifications. Only had to make sure that nothing was too close to the heat shield, and none of the sensor wires were tangled.
So unless mine aren't JVT...but I'm pretty sure they are. All my friend told me about them was that he got whatever people online were recommending from Ebay, from this one specific legit seller *shrug* My headers looked exactly the same as these from the link I provided. Then I coated them myself. It was REALLY worth it for me since I got the headers for free, did the ceramic coating for $10 (spray can), and DIY'd the install. |

The only advantage to JVT (which are NLA, although there are a lot of "JVT reps" out there) are the thin flanges so the studs don't have to be changed out to E36 studs and they were supposed to fit better.
But with the JVT "reps" and any other Chinese copy of the SS header, you may get one that does not require any mods, or you may get one that does. They are all made in the same Chinese factory so if I was buying now, I would look at the cheapest ones I could find on eBay, currently ~$100 shipped plus the OE hardware cost plus software cost to turn down the post-cat O2 (or moving the post cat O2s to the section1). Changing out the studs is no big deal. At that price what do you have to lose?

Yeah, exactly my mindset. Even if my friend didn't give me his headers for free, I would still give the Ebay ones a try; just cause people have had success with them before, and the investment vs. failure rate is pretty promising.

Does anyone know if the E46 M3 section 1 CAT pipe will fit our cars?
It looks the same shape and size as ours, Talking about this

It looks similar but is different. The header is the only interchangeable exhaust component.

Hmm...I've never had to think twice about CEL light with my AA tune. I just did the header flash once and almost forgot about it altogether. How come this is such a big deal? Shouldn't ESS's tune be ironed out plenty by now? It's been around for a LOT longer after all

No idea lol. I never really cared much for the handhelds. When I go FI (hopefully turbo app), I'll do a full standalone or something
ah icic. I suppose since AA's tune is newer, they had more time to iron out kinks |

I was not excited to have to pay for shipping for something that should have worked, but overall I am happy with the product. I like that the ESS code is adaptive to other mods as well.

Really glad to hear that you were able to work around this. I will be chatting with ESS about this again since I still have SES problems with my full SS setup (step headers).
We had to move the bungs on the headers slightly to fix a clearance problem with the SS step headers. To try and solve the SES light issue we sofar tried the following: 1. Had ESS reflash the ECU a second time 2. Installed a pair of race cats and install the secondary O2s in 90 degree bugs behind these cats. 3. Flashed the ECU back to BMW stock to see if the codes would be different. 4. Bought a Bavarian Technic code reader to get the BMW codes. I have not had much time over the winter to work on this but I will be contacting ESS again to try and get this resolved. I have a feeling that the engine is running rich at this point. These are the fault codes currently present in the Engine module: 2C7E lambda probe rear catalyst, trimm control 2C6C lambda probe rear catalyst 2, systemcheck 2C74 lambda probe rear catalyst 2, signal Throttle valve initialisation bank 1 2CA9 heater lambda probe rear catalyst 2, function 2C32 lambda probe front catalyst 2, trimm control 29F4 catalyst conversion 2C78 lambda probe rear catalyst 2, signal 2C31 lambda probe front catalyst, trimm control |
