It's not just the S54 either....
I have a friend in an E92 335 that was getting extended cranking (Petrocan) before firing up. (no hicup/stall though) As soon as he went to Shell..... back to normal.

Just curious if any of you still has the cold start problem after switching to different gas brands?
Also, for the record, I don't think Shell is definitely the cure for the cold start problem. When I was having that problem on my 3.0i, I actually filled up at Shell stations the majority of the time and occassionally at Chevrons. I still fill up at (different) Shell stations now and my Z4M has absolutely no hestation/hiccups when I start the engine cold. Oh crap, I'm probably going to jinx myself now.

It varies area to area I'm sure....
Right now we're getting screwed by Ontario ethanol regulations. Shell is the only one with zero ethanol in their premium blend.

I found this most interesting.... Quote:
- We've been getting hot days & cool nights here for quite a while. - Ethanol levels have been bumped up by the vendors. ~except Shell~

One of the most reputable race and performance shops here in Canada, "Engineered Automotive" tell their customers not to use Sunoco 94 over extended periods due to corrosion problems to fuel components caused by ethanol induced moisture.

Same thing here guys... Usually precipatated by a cold start or extended rest in the garage. Revs flare and then almost stall before settling. Dont u hate how the revs fall so slow when the car is cold, makes smooth shifting a pain. That is interesting Caddyshk, i religously fill up at Sunoco because of the Ultra 94 being the highest octane avaible in ON. In New Jersey all the stations max at 93, although select Sunoco's have the purple pump with 100 octane but that goes for 5 bucks a gallon. What it really comes down to in IMHO is that the S54 needs exersize and on the regular. So Dont forget to Flogg the Banshee gentleman.

I think this threasd has made me paranoid about gasoline and my engine. I haven't had ANY issues starting or knocking with BP (Amoco) ultimate gasoline...but on the other hand...I can't find any information about the Amoco line of gasolines and ethanol content. I've only found one illusion to the fact that the Ultimate (premium) Amoco fuels contain none while their midgrades do not...

I thought it was funny how the images from the web page showed a cleaner throttle body. If there is any fuel on your throttle body you have a huge problem! The torque numbers on the Subaru are interesting. Even though peak HP only changes by 1 the torque value changes by 10? So the fuel is allowing more agressive ECU timing down low. Interesting those little turbo engines. |
