Maybe he meant he could buy "either" car.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

lots of good perspectives on this age old question
as a previous owner for 4 years of an e86 si coupe and a test driver of about 4 m coupes I can only add the following point that I don't think has been touched on: I find the n52 smoother and less raspy and actual prefer its overall character in this regard to the s54 if you enjoy revving out an engine that has more of a frenzy to it, then s54 is for you if you prefer a more mellow buttery engine then n52 |

The EPS in our cars is such an odd duck. It is really still a direct shaft to the rack. Many now are fly-by-wire I think. That being said, the Z4's for sure has issues and is over boosted. A really bad choice for run flats, pretty decent on sport tires.
