Ya I'm bumping an old thread, get over it.
Just remembered about this and want to do it. Does it require cutting any of the stock wiring? Or just splicing ? Lastly, what button do you think will fit best in the passenger airbag light spot? Or lighter w/o dremeling Thanks |

After reading and digging multiple push start button guides. I found that same picture you posted of the pins on the button. Why are the pins wired to the ignition power? Do you mean the power wire coming off the relay? That makes more sense? Doesn't the power for the lights need to come from the ashtray? Or does the ignition power wire work the same?

For a cleaner install: remove the near useless cup holder, install an OE cover plate, and center button in the cover plate. Easy access and easy return to stock if desired.

for the life of me, I simply do not understand the desire to take a perfectly good car and do this to it.

Have you ever missed fired or stalled at a light. Your have to reset key to off and start again. Not with the button, just push. It is also fun to watch others start the car. It might be a attitude problem or personal preference in that it is my car and this is what I like.

Revised Location
After looking at a 08 M3 and a 09 Z4 and noting the location of their start buttons I have now relocated mine to a factory location.

I believe they are referring to the mangling of the starter wires to achieve a much less perfect result than the new Z4's factory version. I had an S2000 before my Z4 and always wondered why Honda didn't just do it right and go keyless. It is a pain to have to put the key in the ignition, turn it THEN have to press a button to actually start the car. My wife has true keyless go on her Audi Q7 and I love it as the key never leaves my pocket. I understand the ability to press the button to restart rather than twisting the key again but how often is this really going to be useful???

The fun factor. Taking a great car and be able to find something you can do to it. I would much rather tune the engine but I don't know how?
The wiring , cut one wire

Kudos for the DIY - still having to use the key makes it not worthwhile.

Honestly, despite it's criticisms, I think this is a great idea. As far as DIY mods go, this is one you can easily customize to your vehicle to make it unique to you. For you wiring Guru's reading this, have you ever thought of a switchboard a la F1. One switch for power, the next to start?
I think it could be done with some clever wiring. Does anyone of the electrical layout of the ignition?

OK to make this better.
Start with some sort of RFid activated relay. Remove the key switch from the steering column and hide it somewhere with key in ignition 2, with a normally open relay cutting the ignition 2 signal. your RFID signals the relay to close when you're close and allows the ignition 2 signal to be completed. Button now works without any work from you. I know they make RFid switches so it's actually doable. Problem I see is car will be in ignition 2 as you approach, and stay that way until you are away from it. IE you would be getting in and out with the cars radio on and stuff. to solve that, use a two position switch, when pressed without a input it only starts/stops ignition 2 (RFID must be close as well) and when getting a voltage input (from clutch position sensor or brake sensor) it starts the car (again RFID must be close)

I have other idea to fix that. Please correct me if I m wrong, I will have just the metal part of key on ignition right? And the eletronics of the key that give signals when I am close to the car, turning ignition on correct? If is this way that works I can fix it in a way tha will not leave ignition on, and the only thing to do is get in the car and press the button. complete keyless and also not having the risk of dead battery or somebody taking of with the car.
Also can I use the engine button from a 328xi 2007? |

I just did an experience and I will not need keys at all to start my car as long they are in my pockets, (also now I'm working to have just to touch the doors for them to open). only thing I need to do is put the key on my pocket and push the button to start and to turn it off. also I have plan to do it in a way that does not affect warranty (talking to BMW dealer to get in an agreement of this mode) so give me about a week and I will post my DIY guide for however want to do this but want it to be reversible and w/o cutting any wire or messing up the warrant. :happy anim: Last edited by Diokaef; 07-28-2010 at 12:57 AM.. |
