So where did we net out on a possible solution?

I have a 3.0si and I have a grind from 1st to 2nd. Also, when I bring the car from 4th or 3rd to 1st at a light while standing still I hear a loud clunk noice.

Would the solution for me be? New trans fluid and something else?
Try the transmission mounts first.

After driving the ZHP for a while and getting back into the M coupe this past Sunday, it made me feel like a complete n00b again. The transmission is such a bear to shift smoothly, and it's so notchy that I botched the 2nd-3rd shift a couple of times because I had gotten used to how little effort it takes in the ZHP.

But oh man, it's such a beast of a car compared to the much more civil 3er. So much fun to drive, but the stock transmission setup is definitely the Achilles heel.

By the way, how many quarts of transmission fluid do we use?

i've recently done the zeckhausen cdv swap, and it's helped appreciably with clutch engagement, but has definitely not eliminated the grinding issue.

does grinding significantly wear the clutch down when it does happen? I must've had a 4-3 grind twice and 3-2 grind maybe three times now.

Clutch, probably not, but the gears themselves, I would think are taking that damage.

What are the best mounts to get? RE or UUC? Should I get aftermarket fluid or just ask them to change my fluid at the next service?

I'm partial to the Rogue, but I think the UUC neoprene are similar in design. I went with MTL 100%, but some go with MT-90/MTL 50/50, depending on your climate. The fluid was a dramatic change for me, it's "slickery" if that is a word, even in the hottest period.

Is that the factory fluid? Sorry if I missed a mention of brand earlier.

I ordered some RP Synchromax but decided to stick with the factory MTL-2 for now for warranty reasons. Reading some other forums it seems like many thing RP-S is a bit too thin, which is why it seems to shift smoother, but it may not be viscous enough to provide adequate gear protection long term.

Oh, sorry man, MTL as in Redline's MTL. Synchromax should be just fine as well. I found the factory ATF fill thin in the summer here, and temps don't drop below 40F.

FWIW, I talked to my mechanic and he said that the stock BMW transmission fluid is actually really good, the only downside being that it's expensive. He told me that he'll change out the stock fluid on cars with 100K+ miles and it'll come out cleaner than aftermarket fluids after much shorter intervals. I sent the RP back.

All I know is that my tranny shifts WAY better with RP Synchromax

I don't know any M owner who keeps fluids in past 15k, but it does make sense that the factory fill would last a long time. cleaner than any other fluid I have my doubts.

After months of not hearing the grind it has returned. I thought it was a fluke, but alas, I was able to reproduce it.

Took the car out on a leisurely drive on a couple wide long highways, and twisting roads up in northern jersey. Launching out of first gear with sport mode on. Hard shift to second made it all come back. Did it again, with the intention of keeping the selector in line and to the left so it falls into second gear with no interruption, and grinded away again. PISSED ME OFF SO MUCH. This is not a sound I should be hearing when I am trying to drive an "ultimate driving machine."

To the stealership it goes this week, and the run around begins. But from what I have read in this forum and other, the solution is yet to exist?

Most of us know your frustration. I wish the 1-2 shift was as butter smooth and reliable as the 5-6 shift.

I've had great success with my other cars using RP Synchromax so I changed out my MTF this past weekend. Amazon.com had the lowest price with free shipping on the RP products. I can't say there has been as much improvement with the 2nd gear engagement as I had in my E39 or E36 cars previously. It might be a little better but so far the difference isn't as great as I had hoped. It hasn't been bad on my car at all so far but then I don't slam it into second from a red-lined first gear very often either. The interesting thing is that my 3.0si coupe wasn't as notchy as the M coupe and they supposedly have the same tranny. Hmmmmmm.

Mine as well!

I still get the occasional 1-2 grind, but mitigate it by not revving so hard before getting into 2nd. My biggest problem is the refusal to go into 3rd from 2nd on occasion. It is smacking the gate. I think this is where stiffer mounts may work. I am going to go with the bimmerworld mounts.

Synchromax definitely makes a noticeable improvement the moment your pour it in.

Gear Synchronizers:
A triple-taper synchronizer is installed for 1st and 2nd gears.
A double-taper synchronizer unit is installed for 3rd and 4th gears.
A single-taper synchronizer unit is installed for 5th, 6th and reverse gear.

I wonder....The sport button allows for shorter gear shifting. Does the notchy, grinding and mis-shifts occur when the sport button is activated?
