Safe Spot to Plug a Tire?

Is this plug too close to the sidewall, or should it be safe as-is?

I had a puncture like that once. I took it to a shop to get patched from the inside and they refused to fix it.

So ominous!

I was thinking the consensus wouldn't be positive. Looks like it's time for some new rubber.

The possibility is there, its kind of like jumping with a fraying bungee cord, or using the hope and pray method of contraception

If I were stranded on the road out in the boonies somewhere, I would patch a tire there only so I could get home or to safety; and then have a new tire installed ASAP.

That is not safe for long term use at all.

I've plugged a lot of tires but I've never had to plug one that close to the sidewall. I'd say be prepared for a blowout. May or may not happen. Feelin' lucky?

^ Waste of money. I've been plugging tires for 10 years and not once, EVER, have I had an issue with the plug going bad or coming out. Hell, there was one time where I had a new rear tire put on my motorcycle and I drove the 5 miles home and I shit you not, I had a big fat screw right in the middle of it. I plugged it and rode it til the cords were showing 6,000 miles later. Not a single issue. Same for car tires.

Next time you plug a tire, send me it after you replace it with a new tire.

Are you saying that you would plug a tire that was punctured in the sidewall, and then continue to drive on it long term, at highway speeds and in hot weather?

I too would plug a tire that is punctured in th tread area. But the rule of thumb for safety is that tires punctured in the sidewall or on the edge of the sidewall and tread should be replaced.

So... most of my driving is city driving, and San Francisco doesn't get very hot. That means speeds and temps are relatively low--most of the time. I think for now I'm going to keep a very close eye on the plug to make sure no deformation is taking place, and plan for a new pair on the rear in the summer sometime.

The offending tire is the driver's side rear. Where I think I suffer the greatest risk is in a fast right turn, if the threads decided to let loose under strain. I think for my day to day use the tire will suffice just fine... it means no ripping through the Santa Cruz mountains for a couple months until I get some new rubber though.

Yes, been doing it that way for 10 years now without a single problem. Maybe I'm just lucky? Doubtful. I do agree though, if the puncture is near the sidewall, I would replace the tire as soon as possible. Fortunately I've never had that happen.
