N52 performance gains 3.0i vs 3.0si is it just ECU and such or is it more!
First let me say HI! I am new to the community and thought what better way to start my time here than asking a question thats probably already been asked a 1000 times before! Ive checked every where and cat find anything on it~
since the N52 3.0 engine from 2006 and on are basically the same engine but one produces 212HP and the other produces 255HP what would one have to do to make the 3.0i act like the 3.0si? ecu map? different rear end? exhaust? intake? injectors? It just seems like if all the internal bore and stroke and such are identical and most of it is just tuning then how hard would it be to get the 3.0I to get to the 255HP level of the 3.0si? so if anybody knows where to find ECU mapping for a 2006 or newer 3.0i I would be forever grateful ! also I remember hearing of the sport button being able to be retrofitted somehow on the older models? with a power cord under the center council, is this possible with a newer 06 or was this just an 03 early build bonus? thanks guys for your knowledge! also i read that you need a 3 stage intake and new software, does this make sence? can anybody explain what steps are needed to get SI power out of an I, this is all reguarding the N52 engine. -Chris- any body have any ideas????? I don't know exactly what is done to the N52 to pump out more horse power in stock form but I would guess it is mostly tuning. I did a little searching and found this...

Applications in the US Market (taken from BMWUSA website 07/10/07): not the Euro version. Here is some aftermarket help: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45158 I would suggest checking out e90post for more info on the N52 since it comes in the 2006 325i & 330i and the 2007-2010 328i, which all have different power outputs that I believe is because of tuning. Good Luck |

it's def the 3 stage intake and a bit more. someone on 3-forum did the conversion and got pretty darn close to the 330i numbers (started from 325i). according to the post, the conversion required:

Most of the power gains come from the 3-stage intake manifold. The problem with the conversion is finding someone to flash the ECU to work the 3-stage intake. The ECUs are matched to the VIN so you can’t just plug in a SI ECU.

would it be possable to take your ecu and ask an aftermarket ecu tuning shop to wipe the ecu and load their tuned si vertion software or even have them load a standard si software? that way it would think its an SI rather than an I. seems like getting the header, muffler and three stage airbox would be simple enufe just would need to get the ecu tuned, not to bad if it really gave an aditional 40+ hp |

That’s all it takes. Problem is no one has the software. The person on e90post had theirs shipped to Germany it took something like 6-8 months to get in back. The company had so many issues they weren’t interested in doing more. That was for the 325i haven’t heard of anyone converting a zed. I haven’t cheeked in over there in awhile you should look around see if there’s any new developments.

I wonder, if you bought a 3.0si computer of lets say car-part.com and sent it out with your ecu, then perhaps they can just reright it to work with your vin or swap maps and such. Does anybody know of some reputable computer tuners out their?

OK did a little digging and it looks like the 3.0 I n52 and the 3.0si n52 have the exact same cams, there is no difference. also the exhaust also shows to be the same, all that’s different is there is the tips which can be bought for 50 bucks each, the real difference looks to be the intake manifold which can be had for 250 dollars from the scrap yard since it is a three stage vs. our 3.0I one stage. I talked to a fellow from craven and he told me this "Hey Christian,. If you do the entire parts swap, then yes you will be right with the z4si we just retune the computer for all the new parts. I am almost positive the cams are not different, so it should just be the 3 stage manifold that you really need to make the power." so in theory all I need to do is install the 3 stage intake and have them install the si remap and recode the computer to recognize the other 2 stages and then the extra 40+ hp can be had for about 600 bucks all said and done either way 40hp for under 1000 bucks aint bad. so what do you guys think am i dreamin! or could it be that easy! |

well i will do it, swap the parts i mean, all i need to do is send my ecu to him and he will program the rest. not afraid to run a few wires and get my hands dirty a little bit.
worth a try. anything is possable! just because they dont have proper sofware yesterday does not mean they dont have it today. |

The ECU tune is available from Gintani / OE iTuning in Van Nuys, CA. They've done quite a bit of work on N52s and have reliable upgrade software for the different flavors: 3.0i = 328i and 3.0si = 330i and 325->330 conversions. I took my 3.0si to them for a reflash and, though the gains were modest, am pleased with the results and would recommend them as a reliable tuner for N52 based BMWs.
