Parking brake adjustment DIY?
Hi there, this is my first post.
I've been looking for instructions on parking brake adjustment for my 2.5i but haven't been able to find them. Well, I found a technical service bulletin but it was not very clear. Does anyone have pictures on the process? I can get a little parking brake pressure when I pull the lever ALL THE WAY up. But it's not enough for parking on the hills of San Francisco... =) Thanks!

says it all.. (3 page tiff, view with something like irfanview) Somehow I cannot find this page on the web version of TIS. This is an export I made from the DVD version This is the auto adjuster that you need to push back in that little retaining clip: I used here a tyre iron, but a really long screwdriver is even easier (perhaps you need both). At the tip you can see the retaining clip, which sometimes has to be pushed to the side to grip. If not clear: here is the auto adjuster situated: (at the base of the brake lever) This is the little wheel adjuster (inside the drum/disk) that you have to turn with the disc mounted (with a screwdriver through the hole of a wheel bolt): In short: 1.push back the auto adjuster in the retaining clip 2. turn the expander wheel in the drum brake until you cannot move the wheel. 3. turn back the expander wheel 9 notches. 4. Release the auto adjuster from the retaining clip. Sometimes I turn it back less than 9 notches, but the wheel definately shouldn't drag on the pads. Last edited by GuidoK; 12-14-2012 at 04:18 PM.. |

Oh man, you ROCK!!!
Initially, I could not figure out the tensioning system at the lever so I went to the parking brakes in the back and already did the screw adjustment. I don't really know why I have *some* tension on the line at full extension. I would think that if my retaining clip wasn't hooked, I'd have NO tension. But I will try this anyway. Thank you very much for the tips. donoman

I was able to complete the parking brake adjustment with your help! thanks!
Notes to future users: 1) Parking brake MUST BE DOWN to compress the spring. 2) After compressing the spring, hook the retaining clip. 3) Go to the the back of the car and adjust the parking brake drums 4) Return to the retaining clip and release. It should be tight now. The whole mechanism didn't make sense to me, but after following the directions to the "T" it worked out. Thanks! donoman

I have the opposite problem. I pulled up too hard one time on the handbrake, and after that when released the pads were dragging the drum, making that aweful noise as the wheel rotated. After driving a short distance it stopped, but I can't engage the handbrake now, or it will drag again.......... it's like when released the cable isn't quite released enough to stop the dragging. Can this be adjusted from just the handbrake itself, or do I need to get to the adjustment at the drum? Also, does the leather armrest surrounding the lever at the center console just pop off by pulling up on it, or is it screwed down. Thanks.

Does the parking brake really need to be in the down position prior to compressing the spring? In the down position there is literally no access to it.
