A modern Z4 coupe, does it exist?
So as of late I've really become bored with my 2016 Cayman S. It's funny how a car you once loved becomes normalized and then almost unlikeable with time. At least or some of us
Anyhou, I've tested lots of vehicles in the last year or so, trying to find something that will get the blood pumping again... The closest I've come is a 2016 F type R awd. Awesome car and if it came in manual it would be the obvious choice. But even though the Zf 8 speed is pretty quick and direct, I still feel like I will miss manual... I rack my brain trying to come up with something that will bring the love back, but given that I don't like turbo cars and want a manual, nothing comes to mind... Here is a list of manual cars that I have tried: m2 m4 2015 audi S5 e92 M3 c7 (owned one actually) Miata RF but none of them did it for me. I have thought about going back to an e86, but I can only have one car as I live in a condo and have only one parking spot, and the Si's are getting a little long in the tooth to be my only car (I want something newer mainly for reliability reasons) What I really want is a modern incarnation of the Z4 coupe 3.0si, a stylish car with an NA engine, 3000lb ish, nice manual transmission, in the 50k to 80k range Just can't think of anything like that out there....am I missing anything |

GT4 maybe? Not sure what those are going for these days
Just get the Z. Last time I did mushrooms, they reaffirmed to me just how special the Z’s are. Slow by modern standards, but the experience behind the wheel is brilliant, as you already know. Times change, but that feeling doesn’t. The shrooms never lie

Dont you get the 6 cyl F type in the states?
The F type S can be had with a mechanical LSD, rwd and a manual. (here in europe at least) Most purists rate that as the model to have as far as F types go. Like the R its supercharged so no lag. A bit like a Z4 on steroids. Maybe slightly heavier. Although the F type S rwd manual about 330lbs lighter is than the F type R awd. At the end of 2018 TVR is coming out with the new griffith. But thats probably too expensive and its going to kill you for sure if it doesnt break down first...

The toyobaru. Light, nimble, toss-able. RWD with stick available, about 50HP shy of the Si, but also about 200 lbs lighter.

What about a late model and low mileage E89 SDrive 35is?
I know - there are lots of criticisms of the E89 generally, but the 35is variant may be worth at least a test drive.

OP's requirement of NA precludes that. I think he's looking for cars still in production too so he can buy new.
I personally think the price range is too high, although the fact the Miata made it on that list probably means the $50K-80K range is the only requirement not set in stone. IMO I'd wait for the new BMYota CeliPra or whatever the f**k they'll end up calling it. Or step up for a Porsche 991.x. I was going to say look at the Lotus Evora but I wouldn't daily drive a Lotus.

Agree on the N52 being a great engine. Love my SI for that. But I don’t think it’s the best choice in the heavier E89. The N55 in the 35is makes an extra 75 or so hp, plus the car has a number of other performance enhancements if that changes the water on the beans. Either way good luck with the search!

I think the Evora S is a great case for a modern alternative - low production numbers, manual, engaging platform, naturally aspirated engine, bridging the gap between GT and a dedicated sports car.
That being said, I still find my 2007 car to be of the modern era. |
