Fitment issue of Mann oil filter on Z4M
Anyone use Mann oil filter on their MZ4?
Part# HU926/4x 11427833769 I found that the inner diameter of the oil filter near the center is much smaller than the BMW OE oil filter. This smaller diameter does not allow me to angle the filter when inserting, so the filter interferes with the intake manifold. I do not see a way to install without damaging the filter. Bought a BMW OE filter, fits with no issues. I'm guessing the placement of the oil filter canister is different on the E46 M3 which would be okay for this Mann filter. Anyone else with this experience? |

That said I've used mann filters and have not had a problem, put the filter in the housing first, then the top. Also, the two housings are exactly the same between e46 and z4.

you are right about it being a little bit harder to fit, i ran into this issue but i gave it a little push to make it get pass the manifold. filter wasn't damaged.

O-cha, I realize Mahle is the OE filter for our car. I ordered a oil change kit from a vendor that included a Mann filter instead of the Mahle. The Mann filter does not fit, but the BMW OE/Mahle filter fits with no issues.
The canister maybe the same for the M3 vs. Z4, but if the relative position to the intake manifold is different, it could be the reason that it doesn't fit on my Z4 but fits on a M3. |

i2ichal2dZ4M - maybe I didn't push hard enough. Didn't seem right to me that it would take that much force to install a oil filter. I'm going to avoid the Mann filters from now on.

i am going to avoid them now too, imagine when removing it next time? oil everywhere! more importantly is if the filter works correctly which im sure it does, just a biatch to drop the filter in adn take it out.

Had this exact same problem. I had always used the OEM filters up until the last oil change. The different filter is what came with the ecs oil change kit. Was a PITA to get it in and im imagining its going to be at least as much fun to get out. |

I've noticed the picture of the Mann filter is different than the OE filter. The OE filter have metal end caps and the Mann don't?

The Mann filter that I have has no metal end caps.
I wonder if the fitment issue is due to tolerance differences between cars. It is such a tight fit that for some cars it doesn't fit well. Since the OE filter is not that much more expensive, I will stick with OE from now on. |

The ECS tuning kit used to come with a Mahle filter. Looks like they switched to the wrong one.
Comically, they have a $90 kit with "Genuine BMW oil" and an $80 kit with Castrol oil. Looks like the $97 kit still has the correct filter, but I don't know if I trust them. Their shipping is so high, I buy everything I can from Tischer. |

Here are the difference between the 3 kits.
$80 - Castrol (New label doesn't say BMW recommended) + Mann + accessories $90 - Castrol (Old label says BMW recommended) + Mann + accessories $97 - Castrol (Old label says BMW recommended) + Mahle + accessories

The e46 M3 kit from Tischer should work for us as well, right?

Just double check a Mahle filter is included and not Mann if you prefer an easier job. Don't get us wrong, i'm sure the Mann filter works just as well as the Mahle. We're just having some clerance issues sliding it into the filter canister, there is no issues once its in the canister itself.

It's not whether I trust the Mann brand. It's whether the correct filter is used for the application here, as it doesn't have the metal end caps as the OE.
A search on AutohausAZ do show an alternate part# that has the metal end caps => http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...0@Oil%20Filter But for not that much of a price difference, I'm sticking to the OE filter for the peace of mind. |

I don't have an M, but I had the same issue, the fitment wasn't even close... I had to bring the filter in to O'Reilly and they had to get an 07 instead of the 06... And it was dead on...

I had the same issues with the Mann filter I got through ECS. I pushed it down and got it to go in. I didn't like how it fit either, so I'm definitely going with the OEM filter next time. I'm sure it will be fine, but the mann filter did not seem to be as good quality as the OEM one.
I liked dealing with ECS, and since I live pretty close to them (about 4 hours), the shipping isn't too bad and I get everything almost next day with ground shipping.

I've looked into this. If all you're buying is oil and nothing else, Tischer is cheaper. If you're buying oil and other stuff (like even 1 more item, ie microfilter) ECS will come out cheaper. ECS charges you like $12 for 1 item, any size, which sucks. But I placed a $500 order last year, big gaskets, oil, tons of stuff, and shipping was $18 It scales up really slowly. And I find ECS has better prices on maintenance items than tischer, IF they carry it. |
