Am I the only one... topless in the dark

I just went to fill up the zed. Since I only got it out of storage on Saturday this is the first fill after burning off all that fuel stabilizer. Anyway I'm at the gas station pumping in the 94 octane stuff, conveniently priced at a paltry $1.53 a litre (roughly $5.75 a gal) when I feel a pair of eyes drilling into the back of my head, you know that feeling of being watched.
I turn around and see the chick in the next lane staring at me. She's filling her silverado. "Really?" she says, followed by "Not really droptop weather is it now?" Admittedly it was almost 9pm and barely 9 Celsius (48F) outside, but it's a clear night and I parked my car in my garage with the roof down when I got home from work, so I didn't put it up to go around the block and fill up. Before I even had the chance to reply she finished off with "Jerk" and left.

Quite why I'm the jerk for driving my car with the roof down at night I don't know (or care), but it made me think. Do any of you drive topless at night regardless of temp if it isn't raining? Would you drop the top if it was up? I know I have in the summer when it's still 25 c (77F).

Bizarre story. I drive home with the top down most nights. I more often drive with the top down at night than during the day.

Top down at night is some of the most fun driving out there. However, I generally only do it in the summer time / early fall when the temps are high enough (above 60 in the day, 70 at night).

Willing to bet that she had very little fun on her drive home... willing to bet that she knew that you were going to.

if it makes you feel any better, i get puzzled and angry stares when i drive down the street squealing with my track pads and catless loud car with shopping cart wing and splitter.

my only defense is that VIR is 45 min away from me and i go there often. but i don't pay the negative attention any mind. neither should you

enjoy

Top down at night!......All the time!! But @ around 10*c or lower you need to dress appropriately and crank the heater.
Don't forget that people in Vancouver think the car is a very bad thing, we should all be riding bicycles.

Your a jerk because if she drop her top all the neighborhood dogs would runaway scared.

Her comments don't bother me in the slightest, thanks though. There's always someone trying to piss on another's parade, unsuccessfully in this case; besides I don't need to justify my actions that have no impact on a stranger to that stranger. Water off a duck's back, really. It just spurred a thought process as to how many other people drive with the top down at night if H2O isn't falling out of the sky. Sounds like I'm not alone in my "madness". Love this car

Quite some time ago I had a drop top. Top down until heated seats, heater, gloves and hat could not keep the cold at bay. I miss that. Night time top down--awesome.

Knew what she was going to say when it started with "really". Geez, it must bite being that bitter and angry. Maybe if she ditched the Silverado and got a Z drop top life would be better.

Night is better with top down to avoid excess sun. After year-round riding a BMW RS, the Z4 is quite comfortable with heaters on high and side windows up with top down. My MG-TF Miget roadster had a ragged top, flappy side curtains and no heater or defroster. Michigan is now getting warmer due to global warming, so I will continue to enjoy the out doors with roadsters and motorads. Let the pickup drivers eat their hearts out with envey. Note: My neighbors to the South are Canadians. Have fun with your top down!

I took it out in 41 degree temps on Saturday. Was wonderful.

She probably had a screw or ten loose.

I've had the top down with temperatures as nippy as 35F. Some people are just haters - don't worry about them. If they want to spend their lives seeing negativity in things and being unhappy, its their loss.

I drive topless at night all the time. Now given I don't do well in the cold but if it's above 55ish I'll go topless with my jacket and crank the heat. If it's much colder than that (not too often in FL) then I'll put it up.

This story reminds me of one time me and a friend were at starbucks. Now this guy is eastern european skinny guy. He's wearing some skinny jeans or something but this old lady comes up to him while we are putting sugar and stuff in the coffee and asks him if he knows what baggy pants mean? Then she proceeded to explain to him how it means you are looking for a boyfriend in jail or something to that effect. Anyways we were laughing our asses off at that one for a while. I mean his pants weren't even baggy at all... not sure what she was looking at. Crazy people.

She needs a boyfriend.

I also love driving with the roof off at night. It's actually my favourite way to go topless... something about looking up at the stars while at stoplights with the heater on, on a cold night... really makes you ponder life

Don't worry... you're as sane as the rest of us here

Day or night, my top is normally down. I tell everyone if its not raining its top down weather. That's why our cars have heated seats and seat backs and powerful heaters. To me, nothing beats having the cold wind on my head while the rest of me is toasty.

I actually prefer top down at night or in foggy conditions to a sunny day... Cool air feels nice

Usually only down to 50 degrees F though... Below that I get cold unless its a white knuckle type of drive

Top down at night is a joy in spring or summer
Night blooming jasmine in Florida, for example; the aroma of the seasons in the north, and hearing the engine with less traffic noise--- the ears are more sensitive when there is less visual stimuli.
That woman is a busybody / unhappy person. Sad, actually. Oh well.
I prefer to have my wife with me in the car, because it is our date car.
People leave us alone.
Although some rednecks in a parking lot, as we are heading into a restaurant, once yelled that z4s are for pu$$ies. I didn't understand what they said initially, but then I roared because they didn't know it was an M, and actually BMW owners get more _________, proven fact!
But that is another thread hahahaha

I got some strange looks a couple years ago driving up to Big Bear with the top down in my old Miata to go snowboarding. For the few moments when the road was clear infront of me I was loving it. No heated seats, but the heater was on blast and I had a beanie and jacket on. So much fun, and one of the best things about having a drop top. I would love to have the air-scarf that Mercedes does, thats a genius idea for roadsters.

Top down, collar up, driving gloves, heated seats and warm air blowing on my feet. That's good below 40 with the sun out and easily in the high 40's at night. I would rather drive with the top down in the 40's properly dressed, than in the 90's on a sunny day.

This babe at the gas station was just an ass and not worthy of your consideration. Frankly I feel sorry for her because she is stuck with herself and obviously doesn't get it.

My wife and I did the Blue Ridge Parkway on Spring Break (She’s a teacher) about 6 years ago and drove hundreds of miles with the top down with temps in the 40's and 50's. She loved it as much as I did.

Do what makes you feel good.
