Hooking up an ipod to my Z4??
I'm looking for a solution to listen to my ipod in my car. I've read dozens of threads on this board and others about installing an aux imput or the DICE ipod integration into their car. I've read several contradicting threads about having NAV and a CD changer and being unable to use the DICE ipod kit and even install the aux imput.
Can someone please clarify for me once and for all what the best option would be given the factory options on my car? thanks in advance '05 Z4 Premium sound w/ DSP 6-disc changer Factory NAV |

I have a DICE unit w/iPod and it's the ONLY way you're going to:
1. See the song title, artist and album scroll across your NAV screen. 2. Use your steering wheel controls to change songs. 3. Avoid an after market gizmo sliding around/cluttering your dash. It's not perfect and there are other solutions, but none of them will do the above as far as I know. I LOVE the iPod in my Z4, who needs radio with hundreds even thousands of songs tucked away inside the storage shelf, I am my own radio station... who needs CD's when you can have up to 40,000 songs on a $350 device with no moving parts. And new iPods came out today! Call the Dice people, see if they are supoorting the new Apple hardware. My Nanos have served me well, but they are already 1.5 years old.

I think i'm about to buy the dice hd/ipod integration unit. It's only $50 more than the normal ipod unit so why not. I have the aux now and I hate having my ipod dangling around in the car. Also, eas is about to come out with a "stealth" antenna that will be completely hidden.

Hmmm, well I think you can KEEP IT, but the wiring harness is used for the iPod as I recall, so it will not be functional. Not sure about this, check with your retailer or call the Dice folks they are very helpful. Mine car only had in-dash CD not the trunk changer.

The DICE iPod hookup will REPLACE your OEM 6-Disc CD Changer. For us without the 6-Disc CD Changer that doesn't make much of a difference but for you, you could either leave it in there or sell it, cant have both sadly.

Hmmm, let's see... 120 songs on 6 discs or 40,000 songs on iPod, which should you choose...

Would installing an AUX imput require me to disconnect the changer too? |

I'm not sure how long the re-design will be. See the following:

The AUX input will NOT replace your CD Changer. The AUX input plugs in behind your stock head unit, the problem with AUX is not CD quality sound, no iPod integration, and no iPod charging either. I use AUX right now and it's usable but I'd definitely prefer DICE or similar. BMW makes an iPod integration as well that plugs in behind the stock head unit and ends up in your glove box (or in our cases lack there of glove box)

Right, but that is like $400 once it's installed. At eas the Dice is $199, I don't know how much the stealth antenna will be but I would much rather do the Dice (and you get HD radio). Even more important - I won't have to take the car in to one of our sub-par dealers to have it installed.

I installed the AUX input today and it worked FLAWLESSLY. Very easy DIY mod. My car has navigation I had to connect 2 additional wires for the NAV voice commands into the AUX radio connector behind the dash (thanks for the tip found over at the Mini Cooper board). In fact, I ended up using the AUX cable that's for a Mini Cooper for two reasons:
1. I didn't want to pay $85 for the Z4 aux kit that includes the ashtray (especially since I mounted the AUX connector behind the dash). The Z4 AUX kit retails at BMW dealers for $85.....it's not $40 anymore. BavAuto has it for $75, but still I didn't wanna pay that much for something I wasn't going to use. 2. The ONLY connector they had in stock at the dealer was for the Mini Cooper. I figured I'd give it a shot since they didn't have anything for the 3-series in stock either. In case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm EXTREMELY impatient and didn't want to wait until Monday when they'd have a 3-series connector in stock. All in all, I'm very pleased with how everything turned out and really how easy everything was. Installing the connector itself took 15 minutes max, but then I spent an hour or so routing the cable back inside the center console where the nav DVD slot is and the 6-disc changer. I have it set-up so my ipod is in the door of the center console. I would've liked to install the Dice ipod kit instead, but since I have a CD changer I couldn't do it. The AUX was the next best option for me. |

I has the BMW iPod converter installed and works great. iPod is stored in the center console. However, song titles are not displayed.
