I'm just using the stock shift knob, since I didn't want the overall height to be too short. The ZHP shift knob is nice though because it's weighted. But it makes the overall height too short, so I never went with it. Plus, a light needs to be retrofitted into it to be same as the stock shift knob

Some people have the Jaffster (sp?) a.k.a. dildo shift knob. They're cool because they make shifting easier. The downside is that well, it looks like a dildo

...dont look too purdy but it works great.

I'm going to do a custom boot to cover the bottom up to the ridge.

Oooh yeah maybe zip tie a portion of boot just above the ridge, or at least to the ridge will make it look a ton better.
I've driven a friend's E46 M3 track car which had the Jaffster shift knob as well, and the shiftig was quite nice indeed.

Are you using stock knob with lead tape?

I'm also looking at this UUC one http://www.bavauto.com/shop.asp
Will a taller and heavier knob than the ZHP (what I have now) do the trick?

Don't you mean a zipper instead of zip tie?? It's almost...

No, just the stock shift knob itself. No added weight; though I think it would be nice to! Never thought of it
Taller and heavier is what I would recommend for track use.

The shop that I'm installing the SSK have a few of these knobs to try it on. Maybe I'll be able to try a few of them and pick the one that feels the best.

Some height comparison

From Left to Right:

OE - UUC(RK2) - ACS - ZHP - ACS style - ACS style

OE is 3.5" and everything else is shorter. Don't know which is better and can't find any weighted knob with OE height. Can't really appreciate the ACS style. Any suggestions?

TIA,

Since many have received and installed the AS SSK from the second GB, I'm bumping this thread.

Care to share what you're using and what do you like?

OE? ZHP? or ?

Still have the zhp and don't mind it. Even had 3 track days since the install...I'll probably swap to my OEM knob at some point for some better leverage.

TROJAN JAFFSTER FTW

spend MINIMUM time hand off the wheel, quick shifts, added leverage removes notchiness factor

but if that's NOT your thing, taller the better when it comes to a SSK

I had since added the one on the far right in the picture.
Heavier at the top and taller than ZHP. It shifts really well. I do understand more leverage on the track; however, Jaffster for the street as well?

I just wish there're more weighted knob choices in leather.

But even on street, the effort to push through the gates from the extreme notchiness was too annoying, driving wasn't nearly as enjoyable. If not the Jaffster, at very least oem M knob... ZHP is way too short to be paired with this ssk in my opinion.

Went with the Jaffster because I installed a center armrest / storage compartment. Could not use a shorter knob and be comfortable. The jaffster is great!
