"Hero" shots from the Rites O' Spring BMW CCA HPDE at Putnam Park
First time at this track. Excellent facility and a great track for working on handling.

I'll put up some of the GoPro footage once a get a chance to edit it. I've got some good footage of traffic from late passes that's pretty neat, including a Lambo that was in attendance...

Video
Had the track to myself the last several laps on Sunday. Unfortunately both the car and I were getting too hot and too tired to do more than about 6 or 7 tenths.

Love where you put the GoPro! Simply Perfect! You get the sound of the engine also and less wind blowing. I'm gonna try that for my next track day! Thanks for sharing

I'm thinking about mounting mine there for the next event as well. I just always cringe though every time I pop out the grill... it's only a matter of time before some piece of plastic breaks. I'm so terrible at finesse things, I always use brute strength lol.

Nice video. Did you have the open or closed back on the camera? I'm thinking of just zip-tying the GoPro plate mount to my grille which should have a similar result.

Yeah, I've got broken tabs for the grill, mostly inboard and upper-- never broke them putting the camera in and out, but from back before I figured out how to best insert and remove the grill for other reason.
Here's a link off to a post (on a different forum) that shows the installation. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...59&postcount=8 I'm currently using the open back on the full (not skeleton) case with a mic muffler on the back. Kind of looks like a raccoon toupee. Here's a link to the site I purchased it from. I'm also using their drop in polarizing filter. http://www.eyeofmineactioncameras.co...uct_p/micv.htm Edit: I also try to raise the hood between sessions, as I've seen some issues from heatsoak back into the camera. It lets me pretend I'm one of the forced induction guys...

You're actually mounting on the bar? I thought you did it on the bumper support. That slipover piece is hilarious, is it actually effective? Is it that bad using the open back? |

I only had the heat problem once late in the day while waiting an extended time on the grid with the engine running and the A/C off, which results in the fan not running continuously, at least at temperatures of that day.
I figure leaving the hood up makes sure the camera is as cool as possible before hitting the grid. I tried this position with pretty much all of the combinations of cases, backs etc, and I think I'm getting the best sound with the open back and the mic cover. YMMV My impression is that the mic cover helps with some of the low freq wind noise. However, there's still plenty noise if I use it in other locations, so it may be the lower velocity air in front of the radiator along with just plain saturating the mic with intake noise that's producing the desired result.

Handlebar/seat post mount.
I'm wondering if you might also be able to set something up with one of the self adhesive mounts on the back side of that radiator bulkhead just behind the grill. However, the good think about the mounting I'm using is that everything is bolted/clamped on.

So what exactly do you mean by heatsoak for the camera?

I had one occurrence where, when waiting for an extended time on the grid with a warm, but shut down engine, the camera posted an error code and failed to record the session. It was also hot and facing towards the sun.
I figure the camera just took a little too much heat, so now I raise the hood between sessions to let the heat out from under the hood instead of soaking back though the radiator and through to the camera. Don't know if it really helps, but figure it can't hurt.
