Afi is working on finding a tuning solution for a reasonable price. Once they do they will let me know. I told them that without a tuning solution there is no reason to try and move forward with fabrication

Yeah AFI is what i meant. ProEFI is definitely a good tuning solution but its quite costly.

Because it's quite COMPLICATED! You can't just wire a standalone into this car and make it work, the engine might run but nothing else in the car will function. ProEFI piggybacked, AEM piggybacked like on the E46 M3, or Nick G. factory ECU retuned are the options. The brains behind these 3 companies are the best in the buisness and it's even difficult for them. No one is tuning this car for a minimal amount of money, you guys just don't get it ...

that was in a lutz thread with the hardware ALREADY in place.....
this is a completely different setup with NO ecu even chosen,.... if pro efi is the chosen ecu, then awesome..... joahness, lets see if this happens first..... :-) are you guys aware of how much JUST the pro-efi hardware is??? nearly as much as the whole turbo kit afi are talking about!!! how can you bring up what ive said from a different thread on a turbo platform thats already developed and working?? not to mention a shop that tunes with pro-efi all day long (this needs detailed training).... bizarre tbh??

Point is, our ECU programming is difficult (i.e. expensive) no matter how u slice it - Reiterating what A4ringed said above.

Supposedly the guy that is doing the tuning is good friends with the guys at pro efi and he is going to be getting the hardware for a hugely discounted price.

guys justed wanted to chime in and say you CAN adapt the stock intake for use for your turbo kits...... they loose shape @ 7psi + but you can reinforce them to take boost, this cuts costs massively as your not needing a cast intake..... definatly a huge chunk put out of your costs....

I figured we could just wrap strips of CF around the whole exterior once it had been well sanded/prepped. Then it could take all the boost you could throw at it. Think of it like the super high PSI tanks for nitrogen or even specialized gas's. Even a Pro paintball nitro tank is done this way with cross hatching of the weave. Maybe we need a proto-type attempt. Anyone have a spare for me to dabble with ? |

Just the absolute bare minimum from ProEFI for the Z4 (harness and ECU) is $4,200 retail, assuming you get an average wholesale price, expect 20% discount. If someone is so awesomely amazing and has a super model wife who gives Jason a BJ daily, you MIGHT get 40%. That's still $2,520, half of what you're going to make a whole kit for, and I can tell you right now you're not getting a 40% discount on the Z4M setup. They are spending about 10x the amount of time on this ECU and harness than they are on the M3 setup, aka not a discountable setup right now. So, this 5k turbo setup is going about as far as this thread, and that's nowhere.

Obviously A4RIngedONE8T is as determined to discourage this low-buck project as he can. Which is odd in that most of us on this forum have been complimentary on your build thread. This is one of those builds where joy could be had if a $700.00 DIY'er ECU such as MegaSquirt would fit the bill. Oh wait.....they do ! That includes harness and sensors in most cases. |

hes not trying to discourage anyone... just give you guys realistic information... yet people continue to ignore it and not be realistic By all means good luck and we are here to help anyone who has questions or concerns! we understand people have a need for "budget" builds and there is nothing wrong with them... We have ALOT of experience in the BMW F/I world from E30's to brand new 2012 M3's.... and we want to ensure that the community is informed properly so that no one makes unfortunate decisions that could cost them THOUSANDS!!! And as far as PRO-EFI, if AFI advertises anything less than list, trust me there will be ALOT of pro-efi dealers that will be unhappy to see what was posted above, so if they want to even consider that, it shouldn't be advertised... Please if anyone has any questions or just would like to bounce an idea that they are considering... even if its not for us to build... email us at anytime!! Andrew: Andrew@lutzperformance.com Shawn Shawn@lutzperformance.com Here is an example of an immaculate E30 we are wrapping up now |

Cockblocking but informative at its finest. But you are correct Andrew....if the tune isn't spot on-(with whomevers ecu is used).....thousands of dollars in damage can result. But I think we already got that one too. Sort pointing a light where there was no darkness really. Anyway.....hopefully something can come from the outcry for this kit. I've moved on anyway since my Z isn't an M and really doesn't apply to this build request. I did go ahead and buy some catless AR Designs Stainless downpipes and a set of low mile OEM N54 turbos and manifolds. If I get time to work with someone like AEM, MegaSquirt or whoever wants to try an S.I. N52 F.I. project...I can do the rest of the fab. |
