Somebody t-boned my Z4 coupe ...
Yup - someone ran a red light, and crashed into my Z4 coupe at 90 degrees, hitting on the front-right corner. My Z4 was kept as a collector's car: had only about 10,000km on the clock ... so very upsetting.
I have been advised that the front of the chassis rail ends have been pushed out by about 12mm on the impact side, and by about 7mm on the passenger side. How to fix? -------------- * Option (1) Chassis straightening + new front and side panels Still early days ... but it seems the insurance would prefer me to have the chassis 'straightened' - this is the cheapest option (would cost about $25k to fix here in Oz). * Option (2): New chassis Another option being considered is a new BMW-supplied chassis replacement. Then they swap over all the bits and pieces from my Z4 + pop new panels etc. This would apparently still cost a lot less than paying me out. But I am worried about imperfect re-construction etc? Any thoughts on this? Any problems that can occur? Or are both options awful? The repairer would be BMW authorised. Last edited by krusty; 07-29-2011 at 02:16 PM.. |

Sorry to hear this. How is the title handled in Australia? Here in the US I'm pretty sure this would result in a "rebuilt" title and getting about half of it's value upon resale. If you can, try to fight the insurance company.
If that is definitely out of the cards, I would go with option 2. As you mentioned, the chassis has already been subject to trauma, thus weakening parts of it. Straightening won't remove the weaknesses, just make it straight. It may be ok for a few years, but could show signs of incredible fatigue later down the road and possible breakage. If it's overseen by BMW, you should be ok. Make sure there's a warranty with the work so you can take it back to get fixed if they mess anything up. Good luck with all this. Sounds like an awful position to be in. |

I don't like either option, but 2 is better than 1.
Sounds like a total loss to me, but the actual price in Oz is so much higher than here I guess repair becomes an option. I'm really sorry to hear about this. |

1) Fight for a full payout. As options 1/2 would not make your car a 'collector car' anymore.
2) If you can't get a full payout, then option 2 is your best option. As long as you can choose the shop that does the work---make sure it's a BMW approved shop. |
