LT-2 vs LT-3 Question
Has anyone replaced a (previously changed) LT-3 (or equivalent) transmission fluid with an LT-2 (or equivalent) fluid and noticed a difference, good or bad? After a considerable amount of internet reading, I have yet to find a reason for the recommended change from LT-2 to LT-3, for Z4Ms built after 03/2007, on RealOEM.
Z4Ms up to 03/2007 are still shown to require the LT-2. It appears that LT-3 has a slightly(?) lower viscosity index than LT-2. I've changed the fluid in my 45K mile 2008 Z4M and replaced it with LT-3. I wasn't looking for any changes in shifting afterwards, but did notice some increased resistance in changing gears after a run down Mt Lemmon, near Tucson, with the local club. I'm not asking for fluid recommendations, but rather the rationale for the BMW change from LT-2 to LT-3. Sorry to open this up again, but thanks for any insight!! First I've heard that there was a change in the spec. Interesting.
I'm also in the Sonora chapter of the BMWCCA and have done a few of the runs in the last 2 years - I'm sure we've met.

Hi, Kevin. What color Z4 do you drive? Are you, by chance, the owner of the beautiful BBS wheels? Mine is the space gray roadster.
That original post was the product of having an excess of time on my hands. I thought the LT-2 might be more "shift friendly" than the LT-3. My decision was to do nothing for the immediate future. |

Space Grey coupe. No BBS wheels, just the stockers. I'll be at the next event.
