Parting ways

Today is the day I hand over the keys for my Z4MC to its new owner. I've had the car for 5-1/2 years and ~14,000 miles, all of which were special. How could they not be? The Z4 M Coupe is an extraordinary piece of machinery that delivers a unique and marvelous driving experience. I said many times that I had no plans to ever sell the car and yet here we are. The new owner will be robblr whom I hope will keep folks apprised as to his ownership experience.

The first pic is the car next to the neat little airplane of robblr . Second is a pic I took yesterday just before driving off from home for the last time.

I miss my Z4MC. The only thing that makes me getting rid of it ok was that I bought the 993. Otherwise I would still have the Zed.

wdb!
So sorry to see her go; you have been an incredible steward of this performance machine; when it's time it's time and wish you the best; feeling your emotions as my goodbye to the beloved Z4MR was this past Oct.

You will pour your love and time into your Porsche and Caterham.

Love your videos of the Caterham on rural roads with Autumn leaves blowing everywhere.

I'm back home after a fun flight with robblr . Car is in his care now. I hope he updates the forum with his progress.

Yep. I have the 996, which has a brand new suspension and is about to have a brand new engine. It's in roughly the same performance envelope as the Z4MC, and I needed to thin the herd, and so it was the logical choice. The rest of the story is really just opportunity and timing. I think the car has a good home.

The Caterham is patiently awaiting a dose of my 'love' (a.k.a. time). I need to pull the engine to reseal the gearbox and hopefully another leak or two on the motor. Also I am >this< close to putting a dry sump on it; the oil pan is very very close to the road, very very vulnerable. Okay for a race-only machine but not on public roads. I also want to replace the seats in it with something a bit less restrictive. Turns out that seats are very expensive things even for that car!

The 996 is getting the aforementioned motor, which will be awesome but ain't cheap. I am also toying with the idea of seats for that as well. The stockers are nothing special in terms of comfort and I intend to put miles on the car.

I'm speechless.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Welp. What started out as a general inquiry three weeks ago about a used M Coupe I saw online has resulted in my ownership of wdb's impeccably maintained Interlagos M Coupe. I couldn't be happier.

After PPI and an agreement on purchase price, I was having a hard time nailing down a ride 200 miles north of home to pick it up. Dave floated the idea that he could drive it down if I fly him back north. Twist my arm!

Looking forward to many years and miles with this little scooty scoot. It's absolutely delightful as is, but I can't leave well enough alone. Most of the major maintenance items have been taken care of, save VANOS and conrod bearings. Suspension is due for a refresh. I briefly considered H&R springs, but I'll likely skip that step and go straight for coilovers. I've got TC Kline DA's on my E82, and will probably go that route. CSL wheels may also be in my near future. I'm between those and ARC-8s (which I also have on my E82). Euro headers and an RE x-pipe are tempting, as is a CSL airbox. You can see where I'm going with this.

Or I could just enjoy it as-is.

Anyway, I'm incredibly grateful to wdb for being such an excellent steward to this rare beauty, and for being so accommodating with the sale. I've lusted after the E86 for nearly 17 years (!!!) and can't believe I own one now!

Yesterday was bittersweet and also a lot of fun. Wishing you the best of luck with the second easter egg! (It's not really very difficult...)
