So I've been doing just that.

By pulling hard left and down, I can shift as fast as I can slam back the shifter and it goes into the gate perfectly. If I use the same speed but pull straight back there's definitely some teeth/grinding happening.

I wonder if anyone else can confirm it, since I could always be unconsciously pausing a little when focusing on pulling left.

First try shifting first to second by slamming it straight back as fast as you can from 1st to 2nd under hard acceleration. If you have resistance/grinding, try it again but this time pull as far left as you can when doing it and see if the behavior improves.
