Non-BMW coolant (or aftermarket equivalent) can definitely cause problems. Prestone or most "green" coolants are not phosphate free and can cause corrosion and/or precipitation problems in BMW cooling systems. I would suggest inspecting the radiator for clogged cooling tubes.
