Actually, TPMS is for everyone - it's federally mandated for all cars sold in the US after September 1, 2007, part of the TREAD Act that was fall-out from the Firestone recall a while back. So it's not the car makers assuming everyone's a dummy - it's the government.

The tape hack Hawkeye referred to should be clarified - you open the guage cluster and put tape on the inside, over where the indicator is, which this blocks the light. A chunk of tape on your guages would look cheesy.
