Just use automotive wet sand paper(its usually dark grey), there's really no way you can screw it up as lomg as you keep with the direction of the original grain marks. My only other suggestion would be to make sure you don't hit one area too much and create a dip, the sanding takes about 25 minutes depending on the condition of your trim, deep nicks might take a little more effort.
