There is no CEL but would codes be thrown up anyway? I didn't realize that was a thing.....I suppose I should have.

I know it's going to sound typical, but if you tried using a BMW code reader or knock off (eBay)? There might be some fault codes that you could read, and most of these allow you to read data in real-time which allow you to get a better glimpse of what's going on with the engine.
