Thanks much! I use a Canon SX40 HS "super zoom" digital camera. It has all the manual controls I need, image stabilization, and an incredibly versatile zoom lens (24 mm to 840 mm!). Plus it's a handy size and weight and has very high quality video capabilities. Oh, and it's not all that expensive.
I use
Photomatix Pro for high dynamic range (HDR) processing and iPhoto for general image editing. If I get desperate, I'll fire up Photoshop and use it to salvage an otherwise-hopeless photo or to put me in a vintage aircraft, flying over the NSA headquarters…
