Beedub I feel your pain, drilling on a round surface is hard.
Try this, put a piece of duct tape in the area you are going to drill.
Using a centre punch give yourself a set point to align the drill bit, worse case use the sharp end of a nail as a centre punch.
The tape is to guard the finish on the pipe in case you slip and also helps a bit in stopping the drill bit from wandering.
