i've been reading that after 'x' miles the sound kinda dies down inside, mellows out and isn't as bad. is this true and how much? i don't want to get an exhaust that's "too" loud (if there is such a thing ) and then pay more money for dynamat or whatever b/c not only could that get epensive, it's also heavy too!

also, does this loudness come from the cans themselves or are you running with headers too? i don't know all that much about exhaust systems...but i want to!
Before buying mine i read that after 1-2k it mellows out. I think it needs about 3k to finally completely break in so to answer your first question yes, it is true that it softens up. It doesnt mellow down by much though. Drone only really affect you if you travel at a constant 2.5-3.2k RPM. If your engine speed when cruising is more than that then it doesnt drone. It's still loud but not that below 3k piercing drone that shakes your ear drums loose.
