Worth mentioning is that Lancaster was briefly (for one day) the capitol of the United States in 1777, when the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia. It then moved to nearby York.

I did not know that about Lancaster (or York, for that matter). One of these days, I'll actually read a comprehensive history of the United States, and then I'll better understand how all the bits and pieces that I run across fit into the total!
Speaking of additional information, my best friend from high school days noted that President James Buchanan attended Dickinson College (my friend's alma mater), was thrown out for bad behavior, and was subsequently reenrolled and graduated.
Lancaster really does seem like a very peaceful place, as you note.
