When to adjust rebound/compression?

This is directed at all of you track junkies out there...I'm looking to get the most out of my coilovers at the track (TC Kline D/A front S/A rear) and was wondering if anyone here has a good guide for knowing how/when to adjust rebound & compression in order to suit the conditions (I'm looking for something a bit more technical than definitions).

I'm sure a pyrometer would come in handy, but since I don't have one maybe there are some tell tale signs that I can "feel" and learn how to adjust accordingly?
