but... yes. if you do anything at all to your intake and BMW discovers this, they may pin failures on the vehicle owner's modifications rather than put the repairs to warranty.
I just want to add while I'm aware in general, any "modification" is grounds for a tech to avoid certain work, I recall reading an actual TIS specific to the charcoal filter removal.
