I had the problem on my 06si - got it fixed last summer under warranty. The total cost to me was free, but out of warranty it would have been $3000+. There were numerous postings on steering problems with the NHTSA, but I think they closed that case by concluding that no recall was needed. So BMW gets away with sticking it to those folks that get outside of warranty coverage. Brutal.
