This is only the only way.
I had this working with software and resistors. But made another modification (can't remember what but unrelated to the wheel) and didn't disconnect the battery. Upon startup the light came back. I haven't made an effort to try all over again. It's a good reminder to not drive like an idiot.
The first post of this thread is the solution I followed. Resistors are 2.3 - 2.5 ohm.
