I did this mod on the 1989 E30 M3 I use to own. It was a lot easier as there were actual kits available for the backing plates. I believe I sourced out my duct-work from the local airport repair parts desk in case any other readers were wondering where that cool looking orange duct comes from.
I'm part way through this now.
Here's the aircraft supplier where I sourced hose and flanges.
I decided to adapt the OE inlets to hose.
I also went with 2.5" hose for easier routing into the OE inlets.
