The equivalent of a 255/40-17 in terms of maintaining overall diameter is a 255/35-18. However you may not achieve the same meaty look as you would get from a 255/40-17. You'd need a taller profile but anything taller than a 255/35-18, ie 255/40 will most likely rub up front.

And 18x9.5 square is going to be tough for the fronts on stock suspension. For a street car, don't see the benefit of going that wide on the front especially without a suspension to go with it. If you want just the meaty look, I say go staggered with narrower tires up front and run a 235/40 say on a 8.5" wide front and 265/35 on a 9.5" rear. Of course we haven't even mentioned offsets...
